Kavan

Kavan (2017)

Summary

Kavan (which means "catapult" in Tamil) is a 2017 Indian Tamil-language political thriller film that serves as an entertaining social commentary on the corporatization and corruption of the modern media. The story centers on an idealistic news anchor who decides to rebel against his corrupt media baron boss and expose the deep nexus between sensationalist TV news and a powerful, criminal politician, using the media itself as a weapon—a 'catapult'—to launch his fight for justice.

Plot

Thilak (Vijay Sethupathi) is a news anchor at the high-TRP channel Zen One TV, which is run by the corrupt media baron Kalyan (Akashdeep Saigal). Kalyan's channel prioritizes sensationalism and financial gain over journalistic ethics, often by aligning itself with powerful, unscrupulous figures, most notably the politician Dheeran Maniarasu (Bose Venkat).

Thilak and his ex-girlfriend, the journalist Malar (Madonna Sebastian), become involved in a case concerning two young activists, Abdul Kader (Vikranth) and Kalpana (Darshana Rajendran), who are fighting against Dheeran's pesticide factory, which is polluting their village.

When Kalpana is assaulted by Dheeran's goons, and the blame is falsely put on Abdul, Thilak and Malar try to air the truth on Zen One. However, Kalyan, loyal to Dheeran, not only blocks the original footage but broadcasts a fabricated video that labels Kalpana as "mentally ill" to protect the politician.

Enraged by his channel's unethical practice, Thilak confronts Kalyan and quits, getting blacklisted by the entire industry. With nowhere to go, Thilak, Malar, and their supportive friends join Muthamizh TV, a struggling local channel run by the eccentric and honest Mayilvaganan (T. Rajendar).

Using the small channel, Thilak begins his counter-attack, airing exclusive reports that expose Dheeran's toxic factory and the truth behind the attack on Kalpana. The confrontation escalates into a dangerous battle of media manipulation, involving a staged bomb blast and a fake encounter, designed to frame the activists and Thilak. Thilak and his team must use every trick they know to turn the corrupt media's power against itself and bring the powerful politician and media baron to justice.
