The narrative unfolds in the bustling metropolis of Mumbai, where Nirahua, a man driven by romantic ideals, arrives in pursuit of his "dream queen." His quest leads him to Sona, a struggling actress, whose ambition and beauty align with his vision. Despite his immediate infatuation, Sona dismisses Nirahua, her aspirations focused solely on achieving stardom.
Sona's dedication to her acting career creates a rift with her parents, who eventually cut off her financial support. Facing dire circumstances, she seeks employment, only to discover that the company favors married applicants. Desperate, Sona fabricates a wedding card, which, through a studio mishap, features Nirahua's photograph. This deception secures her a job.
However, fate intervenes when Sona's friend, Tanu, unknowingly sells leftover fake wedding cards with scrap paper. Nirahua, upon discovering the card, tracks Sona to her workplace. Sona's deception is soon exposed, and she is dismissed from her job, leaving her homeless and penniless.
During this period of hardship, Nirahua extends his support, and Sona, out of necessity and a growing dependence, enters a relationship with him. Their arrangement is disrupted when Nirahua's father arrives in Mumbai. To maintain appearances, Nirahua requests Sona to portray a traditional daughter-in-law, but she refuses. This leads Nirahua to hire Champa, a woman to play the role of his wife.
Nirahua's father is charmed by Champa's demeanor, and he takes Nirahua and Champa to their village, where he arranges a second wedding ceremony for them. Champa, initially motivated by financial gain, begins to develop genuine feelings for Nirahua.
Meanwhile, Sona secures a film role, but her excitement is short-lived when the producer makes inappropriate demands. Disgusted, she rejects his advances and experiences a profound realization of her past mistakes. She decides to travel to Nirahua's village, hoping to reconcile and marry him.
Upon Sona's arrival, Nirahua is overjoyed and asks Champa to return to Mumbai. However, Champa refuses, asserting that while their initial arrangement was a charade, their marriage is legally binding. Nirahua, determined to be with Sona, rejects Champa's claim.
Champa insists that their marriage, conducted in the presence of the village community, cannot be dissolved by a simple denial. She demands a formal divorce ceremony, adhering to traditional customs. The village organizes a divorce ritual, where the priest symbolically releases Nirahua from his marital vows.
During the ceremony, the priest emphasizes the significance of the Mangalsutra and the vermilion in a married woman's hair, symbols of her marital status. Nirahua removes the Mangalsutra from Champa's neck, but when asked to wipe the vermilion from her hair, his hand trembles. He declares that while he can break the vows, he cannot erase the symbol of her marriage.
In a moment of profound realization, Nirahua acknowledges Champa as his wife, choosing her over Sona. He understands the depth of Champa's genuine affection, and the true meaning of marriage.
