Plot:

The story opens inside Bhuvanalayam, a crumbling, oppressive ancestral estate nestled in rural Andhra Pradesh, where Bhuvanam Ramappa Rao Bahadur, an aging, alcoholic, and severely unhinged aristocrat, is dying of terminal liver cancer. Despite medical prognostications giving him less than four months to live, Ramappa defies death for months, his physical decay held at bay by a single, parasitic obsession: an unshakeable suspicion that his deceased younger son, Kusumappa (Kusuma), was not his biological child. Ramappa’s household is an arena of silent trauma. His wife, Renuka, lives in perpetual self-imposed isolation inside a completely darkened chamber, having severed all contact with her husband. His elder son, Lavanappa (Lavana), struggles under the suffocating weight of his father’s erratic cruelty and his mother’s distant grief, while the family’s longtime physician and close confidant, Dr. Srinivasa Achari, remains the sole individual privy to the depth of Ramappa’s madness.

Through a series of atmospheric flashbacks tracing back to 1961, the film reveals the tragic origins of the family's ruin. In his youth, Ramappa was a progressive, free-spirited young man who had abandoned his conservative family and estranged himself from his domineering father. However, when his father suffered a paralyzing stroke, Dr. Achari summoned Ramappa back to Bhuvanalayam to care for the dying patriarch. During this period, Ramappa fell deeply in love with Renuka, the gentle nurse tending to his father. Following his father’s death, Ramappa proposed to her, only for Renuka to reject him, confessing that she was already deeply in love with another man who had abandoned her. Devastated and plunged into a deep depression, Ramappa experienced a surreal, terrifying vision in which the ghostly apparitions of his royal ancestors manifested to berate his weakness, brainwashing him to abandon his individual aspirations and fulfill his sacred duty to uphold the clan's lineage by producing biological heirs. Driven by this inherited obsession, Ramappa renewed his proposal through Achari, and a desperate Renuka eventually consented to the marriage.

Years later, the birth of their second son, Kusuma, shattered the fragile domestic tranquility. Born with dark skin unlike anyone in the fair-skinned royal lineage, the child’s appearance triggered widespread rumors of Renuka’s unfaithfulness across neighboring villages. Infected by these whispers and haunted by Renuka’s past confession, Ramappa grew cold, abusive, and resentful. He subjected Renuka to severe domestic cruelty while heavily favoring his fair-skinned elder son, Lavana. The toxic environment culminated in a tragic domestic catastrophe during the boys' adolescence. After Lavana taunted Kusuma regarding his disputed parentage during a heated argument, a devastated Kusuma violently confronted his brother. Back in the present, the emergence of modern DNA testing technology ignites a new fire in Ramappa's deteriorated mind. Driven by haunting apparitions of Kusuma's spirit, Ramappa becomes obsessed with exhuming his son’s grave to scientifically verify his bloodline before death takes him. He emotionally blackmails Lavana into orchestrating a secret, late-night exhumation under the pretense of a traditional ancestral ritual, covertly stealing a portion of Kusuma’s skeletal remains. When Dr. Achari discovers the desecration and sternly reprimands Ramappa, explaining the legal and bureaucratic hurdles of obtaining private DNA tests, Ramappa’s paranoia shifts toward the physician. Ramappa openly accuses Achari of conspiring to hide the truth, prompting Lavana to turn against the doctor as well. Realizing that the family’s paranoia is spiraling out of control, Achari takes a drastic, calculated risk: he files a false police complaint against Ramappa, accusing him of abducting Kusuma during infancy to force a formal state investigation. This leads to an official inquiry by Police Inspector A. Jagannadhan and a court-ordered forensic DNA examination of the exhumed remains.

While awaiting the legal verdict from his deathbed, Ramappa slips into a quiet, meditative state of yogic sleep, hovering between life and death. The court eventually delivers its official ruling: scientific testing confirms beyond a shadow of a doubt that Ramappa was indeed Kusuma’s biological father. Learning of the verdict, a triumphant Ramappa smiles peacefully, satisfied that his royal lineage remains unblemished, and breathes his last breath. However, the film subverts its resolution during the funeral proceedings inside Bhuvanalayam. Standing over Ramappa’s corpse, a cold, hollowed Renuka delivers a shocking confession to her dead husband. She reveals that Lavana—the elder son whom Ramappa favored and believed to be his true heir—was actually the illegitimate child. Renuka’s prior relationship had resulted in a pregnancy before her marriage to Ramappa, and after being abandoned by her lover, she had accepted Ramappa’s marriage proposal solely to secure a legitimate societal identity for her unborn child.
