Detailed Plot (Movie Story):
The film begins by introducing Ip Man (Dennis To, as the adult Ip Man; Xu Jiao as young Ip Man), as a young boy in Foshan, China. He begins his Wing Chun training under the legendary master Chan Wah-shun (Sammo Hung), who teaches him the fundamental principles of the martial art. After Chan Wah-shun's death, Ip Man continues his training under Chan's senior student, Ng Chung-sok (Yuen Biao).
Ip Man, along with his adoptive brother and fellow Wing Chun student, Ip Tin-chi (Fan Siu-wong), grows up in the martial arts community of Foshan. Ip Man is portrayed as naturally gifted, with a keen understanding of Wing Chun.
As a young man, Ip Man travels to Hong Kong for further education, primarily in a Western-style school. During his time there, he encounters an elderly man who subtly challenges his Wing Chun skills. After being defeated, Ip Man discovers that this man is Leung Bik (Ip Chun, Ip Man's real-life son), who turns out to be the son of Wing Chun's founder, Leung Jan, and an even more advanced practitioner of the art. Ip Man secretly learns from Leung Bik, mastering the refined and more practical techniques of Wing Chun. This period in Hong Kong is crucial for his development, as he combines the traditional teachings of Chan Wah-shun and Ng Chung-sok with the innovative insights of Leung Bik.
Upon his return to Foshan, Ip Man's refined Wing Chun skills are evident, and he gains respect in the martial arts community. He also rekindles his romance with his childhood sweetheart, Cheung Wing-sing (Huang Yi), despite their families' initial resistance due to social customs.
However, the peace in Foshan is threatened by an escalating conflict. Ip Tin-chi, Ip Man's adoptive brother, becomes involved with a Japanese businessman, Kitano (Akira), and an unscrupulous Chinese associate, who are attempting to steal the secrets of Wing Chun from the Foshan martial arts schools. There's a particular focus on the wooden dummy techniques.
A major subplot involves Ip Tin-chi being influenced by the villains or being forced into their schemes. This leads to betrayal and a strained relationship between the two brothers. Ip Tin-chi eventually challenges Ng Chung-sok, and in a shocking turn of events, it is revealed that Ip Tin-chi might not be who he seems or is entangled in a deeper conspiracy.
The film culminates in Ip Man having to confront not only the external threat posed by Kitano and his associates, who aim to exploit Chinese martial arts for their own gain (possibly related to military or industrial purposes), but also the painful betrayal and conflict with his own adoptive brother.
