Plot:

The film opens with Michelle, a fashion designer, in the midst of a heated argument with her fiancé, Ben, over the phone. She abruptly decides to leave New Orleans, driving into the night. While driving through rural Louisiana, she receives a call from Ben, but before she can answer, her car is struck by a truck and careens off the road. She loses consciousness.

Michelle awakens to find herself in a dimly lit concrete room, her leg chained to a pipe. A large, stern man named Howard enters, introducing himself as her rescuer. He explains that there has been a widespread chemical attack, possibly by a foreign power, and the air outside is toxic. He claims to have brought her to his self-sufficient underground bunker for her safety, along with a local man named Emmett. Howard insists that he saved her life, performing a tracheotomy after her accident, and that she owes him her gratitude.

Michelle is initially skeptical and attempts to escape. She finds Emmett, who confirms Howard's story, stating he saw a flash of light in the sky before seeking refuge at Howard's bunker, which Howard had been meticulously building for years, driven by his doomsday prepper beliefs. Life in the bunker settles into an uneasy routine. Howard, a former Navy man and satellite technician, maintains strict control, enforcing rules and rationing supplies. He is meticulous, paranoid, and prone to sudden outbursts of anger, yet he also displays moments of paternal care and even attempts at humor. He shares stories about his estranged daughter, Brittany, and shows them photos, fostering a strained sense of family.

Despite Emmett's assurances, Michelle remains suspicious. She finds a makeshift shiv and attempts to steal Howard's keys. During a power outage, she manages to reach a vent, hearing scratching noises from above and a muffled voice calling for help. Howard catches her and reprimands her harshly, reinforcing her fear. Later, while doing laundry, Michelle discovers a bloody earring in a pile of clothes. She recognizes it from a photo Howard showed her of his daughter, Brittany, wearing the same earring. While he is outside, Michelle and Emmett try to hotwire the bunker's internal door, but Howard returns unexpectedly. He brings back an air sample and shows them photos of a dead pig, supposedly killed by the toxic air, further cementing his story. However, Michelle and Emmett manage to steal a small tool from him. They then try to create a distraction by short-circuiting the bunker's electrical system, hoping to access the control room while Howard is busy. Their plan goes awry, and they accidentally set off a fire. In the ensuing chaos, Howard discovers their escape attempt and the hazmat suit they were building.

Michelle manages to pour a barrel of perchloric acid onto Howard, severely burning him, and then sets the bunker on fire with a Molotov cocktail she fashioned. She climbs through the vent, pursued by Howard, who is screaming threats.

Michelle emerges from the bunker into the seemingly clear, sunny countryside. She sees Howard's truck and a small shed. As she walks towards the shed, she sees Leslie, the "sick" neighbor Howard mentioned, sitting in a truck, covered in grotesque sores and muttering incoherently, confirming the initial chemical attack. Suddenly, a massive, organic alien spacecraft descends from the sky. It's not a chemical attack; it's an alien invasion. The air is clear, but the threat is far more terrifying. Michelle quickly realizes the truth: Howard was not lying about an attack, just about the nature of the invaders. She takes refuge in Howard's truck, but an alien creature with glowing tentacles approaches. Thinking quickly, Michelle fashions another Molotov cocktail using a bottle of whiskey and a lighter. She throws it at the alien, causing it to explode. The alien ship then releases smaller, dog-like creatures that pursue her. She drives the truck, attempting to escape, but the main alien ship sends down a large, tentacled creature that grabs the truck. Michelle manages to throw another Molotov cocktail into the alien's mouth, causing it to explode and release the truck.

Michelle drives away, her hazmat suit now torn, but she is free. She stops at a crossroads, where she hears a radio broadcast detailing the ongoing alien invasion and calling for survivors to head to safe zones, specifically mentioning Houston as a hub for resistance. With a determined look, Michelle turns her truck towards Houston, choosing to fight rather than flee, embracing her new role in a world forever changed.
