Plot:

The story opens in present-day Mumbai, where Bunty (Aditya Roy Kapur) is deeply frustrated by the perpetually sour relationship between his parents, Kishen (Akshay Kumar) and Mala (Aishwarya Rai Bachchan). Their marriage is a constant battlefield of arguments, passive aggression, and a complete lack of affection. Bunty, a young man who believes in true love, is disheartened by their cynical view of marriage and fears for his own future with his girlfriend, Tanya (Neha Dhupia), whose parents also have a strained relationship. One day, during a particularly heated argument between Kishen and Mala, Bunty overhears his mother lamenting that she made a mistake marrying his father, claiming Kishen was always a timid, unromantic man, devoid of any charm that could have won her heart. This revelation deeply wounds Bunty, strengthening his resolve to understand what went wrong and, if possible, fix it.

Later, while rummaging through his grandfather's old belongings, Bunty stumbles upon a peculiar device – a time machine. His grandfather, Professor Anthony Gonsalves (Om Puri), a quirky and brilliant inventor, had apparently been working on it for years. The professor, now an elderly man, explains the device's capabilities and warns Bunty about the dangers of altering the past. However, Bunty, driven by his desire to save his parents' marriage and, by extension, his own future, decides to take the plunge. He sets the machine for 1970s Mumbai, specifically to the time when Kishen and Mala first met.

Bunty's arrival in the 70s is a vibrant culture shock. The fashion, the music, the lingo – everything is dramatically different. He soon locates his young parents. To his dismay, he finds Kishen (Akshay Kumar in his younger avatar) to be exactly as his mother described: a shy, awkward, and somewhat nerdy young man, easily intimidated and lacking any confidence. Young Mala (Aishwarya Rai Bachchan) on the other hand, is a feisty, independent, and extremely popular young woman, surrounded by admirers, including the suave and somewhat arrogant Kundan (Rannvijay Singh), who seems to be her childhood friend and a strong contender for her affections. Kishen and Mala, as Bunty observes, are barely acquainted and show no signs of romantic interest in each other; in fact, Mala often playfully mocks Kishen's timid nature.

Realizing the monumental task ahead, Bunty decides to take matters into his own hands. He becomes Kishen's secret mentor, guide, and stylist. His first mission is to transform Kishen's appearance. He introduces Kishen to the latest 70s fashion trends: bell-bottoms, colourful shirts, and platform shoes, a stark contrast to Kishen's conservative attire. Beyond fashion, Bunty attempts to instill confidence in Kishen, teaching him how to walk with a swagger, talk smoothly, and stand up for himself. Kishen, initially bewildered by Bunty's unsolicited advice, slowly starts to embrace these changes, albeit awkwardly at first.

Bunty orchestrates various scenarios to bring Kishen and Mala together. He arranges for them to meet at parties, sets up "chance" encounters, and even tries to teach Kishen some dance moves to impress Mala. One pivotal moment involves a street brawl where Bunty pushes Kishen to defend Mala's honour against some local goons. Kishen, despite his initial fear, manages to fight them off, earning a glimmer of respect and admiration from Mala. This incident marks a turning point; Mala begins to see a different side to Kishen, one that is brave and protective, a stark contrast to the meek boy she knew.

As Kishen's transformation progresses, he becomes more confident, charming, and even a bit of a local hero, much to Bunty's delight. Mala finds herself increasingly drawn to this new, charismatic Kishen. Their interactions become more frequent and flirtatious. They go on dates, share romantic moments, and a genuine connection begins to blossom. However, Bunty's interference also creates unforeseen complications. His presence and actions in the past begin to subtly alter the timeline, and he constantly worries about accidentally erasing himself from existence or creating an alternate future he doesn't desire. He also has to contend with Kundan, who is still actively pursuing Mala and views Kishen as a sudden rival.

Bunty realizes that merely getting them to fall in love isn't enough; he needs to ensure they get married. He continues to subtly push Kishen, encouraging him to propose to Mala. The film builds towards a grand climax, a wedding where Kishen and Mala are finally united. Bunty watches with a mix of joy and trepidation as his parents exchange vows, knowing that his mission is accomplished. He shares an emotional farewell with his young parents, who, unaware of his true identity, have come to view him as a quirky but helpful friend.

With his task complete, Bunty returns to the present day using the time machine. He arrives back in his home, anxious about what he will find. To his immense relief and joy, the present has been dramatically altered for the better. Kishen and Mala are now a loving, affectionate, and vibrant couple, their home filled with laughter and warmth instead of arguments. They are still playful and teasing, but with a deep underlying love and respect. Their relationship is everything Bunty had hoped for.
