Summary:

American Hustle is a fictionalized account of the FBI's Abscam operation in the late 1970s and early 1980s. The story follows brilliant con artist Irving Rosenfeld, who along with his equally cunning and seductive British partner Sydney Prosser, is forced to work for a wild FBI agent, Richie DiMaso. DiMaso pushes them into a world of New Jersey power brokers and mafia, which is as dangerous as it is enchanting.

The film explores themes of ambition, reinvention, and the blurred lines between right and wrong, as the cons try to navigate the dangerous sting operation while their complicated personal relationships threaten to unravel everything.

Plot:

Irving Rosenfeld, a successful con artist running a string of small-time scams, meets Sydney Prosser, a former stripper with big ambitions. They quickly fall in love and become partners, with Sydney adopting the persona of "Lady Edith Greensly" to lure in marks. Their operation is eventually busted by ambitious FBI agent Richie DiMaso, who offers them immunity if they help him ensnare corrupt politicians in a sting operation.

The target becomes Carmine Polito, the well-intentioned but financially struggling mayor of Camden, New Jersey. As the sting deepens, drawing in mob figures and escalating beyond DiMaso's control, Irving's unpredictable and volatile wife, Rosalyn, threatens to expose the entire operation. Irving and Sydney must use all their cunning to navigate the increasingly dangerous game, trying to outwit the FBI, the mob, and each other, all while their complex personal entanglements reach a boiling point.
