Plot:

The film opens with author Nathan Zuckerman attending his 45th high school reunion, where he learns of the death of his former idol, Seymour "Swede" Levov. Zuckerman then begins to piece together Swede's tragic story. Swede Levov, a handsome and successful Jewish-American businessman who inherited his family's glove factory, lives a seemingly perfect life with his former beauty queen wife, Dawn, and their intelligent, though stuttering, daughter, Merry, in a charming New Jersey suburb. Their life embodies the post-war American dream.

However, as the 1960s progress and the Vietnam War intensifies, Merry becomes increasingly rebellious and politically radicalized. In 1968, a local post office is bombed, killing a doctor, and Merry is implicated as the primary suspect. She vanishes, leaving Swede and Dawn devastated. Swede embarks on a relentless and agonizing search for Merry, which spans years and takes him through various underground channels. He encounters enigmatic figures who claim to know Merry's whereabouts or motivations, each encounter deepening his confusion and despair. Dawn, unable to cope with the trauma, suffers a mental breakdown and eventually seeks solace elsewhere.
