Summary:

Plot:

The film opens in the lush, vibrant rainforests of Mesoamerica, where Jaguar Paw, a young man of a remote hunting tribe, lives a seemingly idyllic life. He hunts tapirs with his father, Flint Sky, and other tribesmen, demonstrating his prowess and connection to nature. During one such hunt, they encounter a group of terrified, dishevelled refugees fleeing in silence through the jungle. Flint Sky advises his son to "never be afraid," but the encounter foreshadows impending doom. Later, back in their peaceful village, Jaguar Paw engages in playful banter with his pregnant wife, Seven, and their young son, Turtles Run, amidst the simple, communal life of their people.

Dawn breaks violently as the village is attacked by a ruthless band of Holcane raiders, led by the formidable Zero Wolf, the sadistic Middle Eye, and the grim Snake Ink. The raiders are brutal, killing many of the villagers, burning their homes, and capturing the survivors. Before being captured himself, Jaguar Paw manages to lower Seven, who is heavily pregnant, and Turtles Run into a deep, dry cenote (a natural pit) for safety, promising to return for them. He is then captured and tied with other survivors, including his father, Flint Sky. During the chaotic aftermath, Middle Eye mockingly executes Flint Sky in front of Jaguar Paw, further fueling his son's desperate resolve for revenge and survival. The captured villagers are then forced on a grueling march through the jungle, leaving their destroyed homes behind.

The journey to the Mayan city is arduous and filled with suffering. The raiders are merciless, killing the weak and injured, and taunting their captives. They pass through lands ravaged by deforestation, depleted resources, and disease, encountering villages decimated by plague and crops failing. This stark imagery serves as a powerful commentary on the decline of the Mayan civilization. A young girl afflicted with smallpox, ostracized by the raiders, delivers a chilling prophecy of the "end of their world" to the weary captives. As they near the city, the sheer scale of the Mayan civilization becomes apparent – massive pyramids, bustling marketplaces, and countless people, a stark contrast to Jaguar Paw's simple forest life.

Upon arrival, the captives are led through the teeming, decaying city, witnessing scenes of poverty, sickness, and ritualistic sacrifice. They are taken to the top of a colossal pyramid, where human sacrifices are being performed to appease the gods, who are believed to be angry and causing the widespread drought and disease. Jaguar Paw and the other men are painted blue and led one by one to the altar. As Zero Wolf and his raiders watch from below, the high priest ritually extracts the hearts of the victims and decapitates them, sending their bodies tumbling down the pyramid steps. Jaguar Paw is next, lying on the altar, terrified but defiant. Just as the priest raises his obsidian knife, a solar eclipse begins, plunging the world into an eerie twilight. The eclipse is interpreted by the priests as a sign that the gods have been appeased, and the remaining captives, including Jaguar Paw, are spared from sacrifice, much to the frustration of the raiders who had promised them riches for the captives.

Instead of freedom, the spared captives are taken to a vast field and released, one by one, into a "game" where they are hunted by the raiders for sport. Zero Wolf declares that they can earn their freedom if they can reach the end of the field without being killed. The raiders, armed with spears and arrows, mercilessly hunt them down. Jaguar Paw, using his superior jungle knowledge and agility, manages to evade several attacks. He witnesses a fellow captive killed and uses the distraction to his advantage. He then faces Snake Ink, one of his father's killers, and manages to kill him with a well-aimed dart, retrieving the obsidian knife that killed his father, marking his first act of vengeance.

The chase intensifies as Jaguar Paw plunges back into the dense jungle, his natural habitat. The raiders, led by Zero Wolf, Middle Eye, and their remaining men, pursue him relentlessly. Jaguar Paw uses his intimate knowledge of the forest to set traps and gain an advantage. He lures one raider into a pit trap filled with venomous snakes, killing him. He then confronts Middle Eye at a waterfall. After a brutal struggle, Jaguar Paw pushes Middle Eye over the edge, sending him plummeting to his death. This act of revenge is particularly satisfying given Middle Eye's role in his father's death.

Meanwhile, Seven and Turtles Run are still trapped in the cenote, desperately waiting for Jaguar Paw to return. Heavy rains begin, and the pit slowly starts to fill with water, threatening to drown them. Seven eventually gives birth to their second son in the rising water, a testament to her resilience and the new life emerging amidst the chaos. The new baby's cries attract a jaguar, which stalks them, adding another layer of danger to their already precarious situation.

Back in the jungle, the chase continues. Jaguar Paw is injured but undeterred. He leads Zero Wolf and the remaining raiders through increasingly dangerous terrain. He uses the environment against them, leading them through a quicksand pit where one raider perishes. He then constructs a makeshift spear trap, impaling another pursuer. The pursuit culminates in a desperate stand-off. Zero Wolf, now enraged and with only a few men left, tracks Jaguar Paw to a clearing near the coast. As Jaguar Paw runs towards the beach, he spots an impossible sight: massive wooden ships anchored offshore, carrying Spanish conquistadors. The sight of these alien vessels momentarily stuns both Jaguar Paw and his pursuers, as the future of their world literally arrives before their eyes.

Jaguar Paw, realizing the immense significance of this arrival, makes a pivotal decision. He turns away from the ships, choosing not to engage with this new, unknown threat. Instead, he runs back into the jungle, where he finds Seven, Turtles Run, and their newborn son, having barely survived the rising waters of the cenote and the jaguar attack. The family is reunited, battered but alive. As they stand together, looking back towards the shore where the Spanish ships loom, Seven asks what they should do. Jaguar Paw, having faced the collapse of his old world and the arrival of a new one, simply says, "We will go back. To the jungle." They turn and walk deeper into the forest, choosing to face an uncertain future in the sanctuary of their ancestral home, away from the encroaching new world order.
