Initial Haunting and Family History
The film begins with a young Jyothi experiencing a terrifying encounter with a spirit within her ancestral home. Her father, Zamindar Rajasekhar, harbors resentment towards her as her mother, Eeshwari, died giving birth to her. Disbelieving her claims, he dismisses her fears and sends her to a boarding school.
Years pass, and a court order compels Rajasekhar to open a long-sealed secret room in the village temple. He is fearful of what might be inside. However, the room is found to be empty, much to his relief, but also bewilderment. Soon after, his loyal servant and driver, Durai, dies mysteriously.
Return and Escalating Events
Jyothi, now an adult, returns for Durai's funeral and develops a romantic connection with her childhood sweetheart, Saravanan. She soon realizes that the spirit that haunted her in childhood is now targeting her young relative, Shalu.
The haunting escalates, with Jyothi being lured to her late mother's room and nearly killed by a falling chandelier, only to be saved by a portrait of her mother, Eeshwari. She has further encounters with Eeshwari's spirit and the spirit haunting Shalu. In a particularly disturbing incident, Shalu is doused in paint thinner and is chased by the spirit. She is rescued by her father, Ravi.
Ravi, at Jyothi's urging, begins to investigate the mysterious events. His investigation of Eeshwari's room uncovers a photo of Jyothi's parents with three servants, two of whom have their faces scratched out. Shortly after, the third servant in the photo is murdered.
Exorcism Attempts and Revelations
Ravi and Jyothi seek the help of priests to exorcise the palace. They manage to trap one of the spirits, but the other, which has possessed Saravanan, breaks free. Ravi discovers that this spirit is Eeshwari, and that she is responsible for the attacks.
The deaths lead Rajasekhar to seek help from Saamiyaadi, a hermit priest. Saravanan, still possessed, attacks them. Ravi saves Rajasekhar, but Saamiyaadi is left to confront Eeshwari. Rajasekhar then reveals the truth about Eeshwari's past to Ravi.
Flashback and the Truth
Rajasekhar had forced Eeshwari into marriage. She was already engaged to Saamiyaadi's son, Samikannu. When Eeshwari gave birth to a child resembling Samikannu, Rajasekhar realized she was pregnant at the time of their marriage. Enraged, he had the child secretly killed and buried in the palace, and then murdered Eeshwari.
Samikannu stole Eeshwari's body and attempted to revive her with black magic. The ritual transformed her into a monstrous being, and Samikannu abandoned her in horror. Eeshwari later killed the midwife who had poisoned her child and threatened Rajasekhar. Rajasekhar convinced Saamiyaadi to help him trap Eeshwari's spirit. Saamiyaadi tricked Samikannu into luring out Eeshwari's spirit, and they trapped her in the hidden room in the temple. During this process, Saamiyaadi accidentally killed Samikannu and retreated to the forest in grief.
The Climax
In the present, Eeshwari reveals that Durai, on Rajasekhar's orders, had killed Samikannu. Eeshwari's goal is to replace Jyothi's soul with that of her dead child, believing that Jyothi is living the life her child should have had. She manipulates Saamiyaadi into helping her raise Samikannu's spirit. Saamiyaadi succeeds, but dies in the process.
Ravi and Jyothi trap Eeshwari's child's spirit and take it to the priests. They attempt to lay Eeshwari and her child to rest, but Samikannu's spirit arrives. Eeshwari's spirit kills Rajasekhar.
In the film's climax, Jyothi, Ravi, and the priests confront and banish Eeshwari, Samikannu, and Eeshwari's child's spirits during a religious festival, freeing Saravanan from Eeshwari's possession.
