Plot:
In November 1979, Iranian revolutionaries storm the U.S. embassy in Tehran, taking 52 Americans hostage. Amidst the chaos, six embassy staff members manage to escape and find refuge at the home of Canadian Ambassador Ken Taylor. With the six "houseguests" facing imminent discovery and execution, the U.S. State Department and CIA are desperate for a viable extraction plan.
CIA exfiltration specialist Tony Mendez proposes an unconventional, high-risk strategy: create a fake Hollywood film production, claim to be scouting locations in Iran, and smuggle the six Americans out as members of the film crew. With the help of veteran makeup artist John Chambers and cynical producer Lester Siegel, Mendez establishes a credible fake production for a science fiction film called "Argo." He travels to Tehran, supplying the diplomats with Canadian passports and new identities as part of the film crew, training them rigorously on their cover stories.
Despite escalating tensions, growing suspicion from Iranian authorities, and a last-minute order from Washington to abort the mission, Mendez proceeds. After a harrowing series of close calls and intense scrutiny at the airport, Mendez and the six Americans successfully board a Swissair flight out of Iran, narrowly escaping capture and bringing an end to one of the most improbable rescue missions in history.
