Plot:

In the summer of 1935, at the Tallis family estate, 13-year-old aspiring writer Briony Tallis witnesses a flirtatious encounter between her older sister Cecilia and Robbie Turner, the son of the family's housekeeper. Later, Briony accidentally reads a sexually explicit letter Robbie intended for Cecilia. That evening, after her cousin Lola is sexually assaulted, Briony, influenced by her misinterpretation of Robbie's actions and the letter, falsely identifies Robbie as the assailant to the police, despite his protests of innocence. Robbie is arrested and imprisoned, devastating Cecilia, who believes in his innocence and cuts ties with her family.

Years later, as World War II rages, Robbie is released from prison on the condition that he enlist in the army. Cecilia, now a nurse, refuses to speak to her family and maintains contact with Robbie through letters. Briony, consumed by guilt, trains as a nurse, hoping to atone for her past.
