Summary:

Plot:

The story begins in 2154, introducing Jake Sully, a paraplegic former Marine. His identical twin brother, Tom, a scientist in the Avatar Program, has died, and Jake is offered the opportunity to take his place on Pandora due to their genetic match. Jake arrives at the RDA's Hell's Gate base on Pandora, a moon teeming with exotic, often dangerous, flora and fauna. He is introduced to Dr. Grace Augustine, head of the Avatar Program, who is initially dismissive of Jake's military background and lack of scientific training. Jake's primary mission, assigned by Colonel Miles Quaritch, head of RDA security, is to infiltrate the Na'vi tribe living near the largest unobtanium deposit, known as Hometree, and gather intelligence to persuade them to relocate. Jake's first excursion in his avatar body is overwhelming; he experiences the freedom of movement and the vibrant, bioluminescent jungle. During this initial mission, he becomes separated from his team and is attacked by a Thanator, a formidable predator. He is unexpectedly rescued by Neytiri, a female Na'vi hunter, who, after some hesitation and a sign from Eywa (the Na'vi's deity and interconnected life force), takes him back to her clan, the Omaticaya.

Neytiri's father, Eytukan, the clan chief, and her mother, Mo'at, the spiritual leader, decide that Jake must be taught their ways. Jake begins his immersion into Na'vi culture under Neytiri's tutelage. He learns their language, their hunting techniques, their spiritual connection to nature, and how to ride a Direhorse. His initial clumsiness and human perspective gradually give way to a deeper understanding and respect for the Na'vi's harmonious existence with Pandora. As Jake spends more time in his avatar, his human body lies in a trance-like state in a link unit. Jake's bond with Neytiri deepens, culminating in his successful rite of passage where he tames an Ikran, a flying mountain banshee, and becomes one of the Na'vi. He is formally accepted into the Omaticaya clan, and he and Neytiri become mates. During this time, Dr. Grace Augustine also attempts to establish a school to teach the Na'vi English and human customs, hoping to foster peaceful coexistence, but Quaritch's military agenda constantly undermines these efforts. The RDA's true objective becomes clearer: they want the unobtanium beneath Hometree, and they are prepared to use force if necessary. Quaritch gives Jake a deadline to convince the Na'vi to move, threatening to destroy Hometree if they refuse. Jake, now fully committed to the Na'vi, tries to warn them, revealing his true mission and his connection to the RDA. The Na'vi feel betrayed and ostracize him, while Grace is heartbroken by the revelation.

Despite Jake's pleas and warnings, the Na'vi refuse to abandon Hometree, considering it a sacred part of their identity. Quaritch, seeing their refusal as an act of war, launches a full-scale assault on Hometree. The attack is brutal and devastating, with AMP suits and gunships unleashing explosives on the ancient tree. The Na'vi, despite their fierce resistance, are outmatched by the RDA's superior firepower. Hometree is destroyed, collapsing and killing many Na'vi, including Eytukan. The survivors are left scattered and homeless, their spirit broken. Jake, Grace, and Norm Spellman (another avatar driver) are branded as traitors by Quaritch. They manage to escape with the help of Trudy Chacón, a sympathetic pilot, but are pursued and attacked. Grace is critically wounded during their escape, shot by Quaritch.

Jake, Grace, and Norm retreat to a hidden base. With Grace's life fading, Jake attempts a desperate measure: to transfer her consciousness permanently into her avatar body through the Tree of Souls, a powerful Na'vi spiritual site. The ritual is performed by Mo'at and the clan, but Grace's injuries are too severe, and she dies during the transfer, her spirit becoming one with Eywa. Devastated but resolute, Jake realizes that the only way to save Pandora is to unite the Na'vi clans against the RDA. He takes a monumental risk, venturing to the perilous Floating Mountains to seek out and tame the legendary Great Leonopteryx, or Toruk, a mythical apex predator. By succeeding in this feat, Jake earns the title "Toruk Makto" (Rider of Toruk), a revered figure in Na'vi prophecy who unites the clans in times of great sorrow. His act inspires the scattered Na'vi to rally behind him.

Jake, as Toruk Makto, travels across Pandora, using the spiritual network to call upon all the various Na'vi clans. He successfully unites them, forming an unprecedented alliance against the RDA. Quaritch, anticipating a counter-attack, prepares for a decisive battle, mobilizing all his forces to destroy the Tree of Souls, believing it to be the Na'vi's central nervous system and the key to breaking their spirit. The final battle is a massive confrontation between the technologically superior human forces and the unified Na'vi clans. The Na'vi, led by Jake and Neytiri, fight with courage and cunning, using their knowledge of the terrain and their connection to Pandora's wildlife. Trudy Chacón sacrifices herself during the aerial combat, attempting to protect the Na'vi. The battle is fierce, with heavy casualties on both sides.

As the battle rages, Jake makes a desperate plea to Eywa through the Tree of Souls, asking for help. In a miraculous turn, Pandora's wildlife, from Viperwolves to Hammerhead Titanotheres, rise up and join the Na'vi in their fight, overwhelming the human forces. This intervention, orchestrated by Eywa, turns the tide of the battle. Quaritch, in his heavily armed AMP suit, targets Jake's human link unit, intending to kill him in his vulnerable human form. Neytiri, fighting fiercely, manages to destroy Quaritch's mobile command center. Quaritch, enraged, confronts Jake in his avatar body, severely damaging the link unit and nearly killing Jake. As Quaritch prepares to deliver a fatal blow to Jake's human body, Neytiri arrives, saving Jake by killing Quaritch with her bow and arrows, ending his reign of terror.

With Quaritch defeated and their forces decimated by the Na'vi and Pandora's enraged wildlife, the remaining RDA personnel are rounded up and expelled from Pandora, sent back to Earth. Only a select few, including Norm and other scientists who sided with the Na'vi, are allowed to remain. The film concludes with a powerful spiritual ritual at the Tree of Souls, where Jake's consciousness is permanently transferred from his human body into his avatar body. He fully embraces his new life as a Na'vi, signifying his complete transformation and commitment to Pandora and its people, a true rebirth into his chosen family and world, leaving his human past behind.
