Plot:

The film opens with a prologue detailing NASA's discovery of an exoplanet, "Planet G," believed to harbor conditions suitable for life. A powerful digital signal is transmitted from a Hawaiian communications array, intended to make contact. The story then shifts to Alex Hopper, a brilliant but aimless young man in Honolulu, Hawaii. After attempting to impress Samantha Shane, the daughter of Admiral Shane, by breaking into a convenience store for a chicken burrito, he is tasered and arrested. His older brother, Commander Stone Hopper, a decorated naval officer, intervenes and forces Alex to join the U.S. Navy, hoping to instill discipline and purpose. Alex, despite his rebellious nature, becomes a highly skilled but undisciplined lieutenant, serving as a tactical action officer on the Arleigh Burke-class destroyer USS John Paul Jones.

Years later, Alex is still struggling with authority, constantly clashing with his superiors, particularly Captain Yugi Nagata of the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force, during the Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) international naval exercises. Meanwhile, Samantha Shane, now a physical therapist, is accompanying retired U.S. Army veteran Mick Canales, who has prosthetic legs, on a hike up Oahu's Koko Head crater. Unbeknownst to them, the signal sent to Planet G has been received, and five extraterrestrial spacecraft are rapidly approaching Earth. One of the ships crashes into a Hong Kong satellite, while another malfunctions and crashes in the Pacific Ocean. The remaining three ships land near the RIMPAC exercise area, creating an energy field that isolates a portion of the ocean, trapping the USS John Paul Jones, USS Sampson (captained by Stone Hopper), and JMSDF destroyer Myōkō (captained by Nagata) inside.

The USS Sampson, being the closest, is sent to investigate the strange vessels. As a boarding party approaches, the aliens react defensively, firing a warning shot that strikes the Sampson's radar. When the boarding party attempts to make contact, the alien ship retaliates, destroying the Sampson and killing Stone Hopper and most of its crew. Alex, witnessing his brother's death, is consumed by grief and rage. With the Sampson destroyed and the USS John Paul Jones's commanding officer killed in the initial attack, Alex, as the senior surviving officer, is thrust into command. He is immediately faced with the daunting task of fighting a technologically superior enemy with unknown intentions.

The aliens, equipped with powerful energy weapons and armored ships, prove to be formidable adversaries. Their ships generate impenetrable force fields, rendering conventional weaponry largely ineffective. During the first major engagement, the aliens deploy "shredders," large, spherical projectiles that can tear through naval vessels with devastating force. The John Paul Jones and Myōkō engage the alien ships in a tense battle, during which Alex, despite his previous insubordination, begins to display tactical brilliance. He realizes the aliens' sensory systems are vulnerable to sound, using the tsunami warning buoys in the area to track their movements when their visual sensors are impaired by the sun. Samantha and Mick realize the aliens are not necessarily hostile in the human sense, but are focused on their mission. The veterans, eager for one last fight, help man the ship. The Missouri, under Alex's command, steams towards the alien mothership, which is now attempting to activate the communication array on Oahu. The climax involves a spectacular showdown between the antiquated battleship and the advanced alien technology.
