Bindas Rani (2018):

Summary:

"Bindas Rani" (Kolamavu Kokila) is a dark comedy revolving around Kokila, a young woman from a poor family. To afford her mother's cancer treatment, she gets entangled in a cocaine smuggling operation. As she becomes more involved, her entire family is unexpectedly drawn into the dangerous world of drug trafficking, leading to a series of perilous and often darkly humorous situations as they try to navigate the deadly mafia.

Plot:

The film opens with a violent scene establishing the dangerous world of a cocaine cartel led by a ruthless man named Bhai. In a contrasting setting, we are introduced to Kokila (Nayanthara), a seemingly ordinary and timid young woman struggling to make ends meet and support her family, which includes her ailing mother (Saranya Ponvannan), her helpless father (R.S. Shivaji), and her younger sister, Shobi (Jacqueline).

Kokila faces immense pressure as her mother is diagnosed with terminal lung cancer, and the family lacks the funds for the expensive treatment. Desperate to save her mother's life, Kokila's search for income leads her to a chance encounter with a local drug smuggler named Mohan (Charles Vinoth). Seeing an opportunity to make quick money, she reluctantly gets involved in his cocaine smuggling business.

Initially, Kokila is hesitant and scared, but her desperation and quick-wittedness allow her to navigate the dangerous environment. She learns the tricks of the trade and earns a reputation for being cunning and reliable within Mohan's network. However, the arrival of a strict and honest police inspector, Guru (Saravanan), puts everyone in the drug business on high alert, and Kokila narrowly avoids getting caught on several occasions.

As Kokila becomes more deeply involved, she tries to find a way out, wanting to protect her family from the inherent risks. She even manipulates Mohan into eliminating two of his own men whom she suspects of being informants. When she decides to quit the business, Mohan seemingly agrees but then attempts to harm her. In self-defense, Kokila and her family brutally overpower Mohan and his men.

However, their attempt to flee is thwarted by Bobi (Arun Alexander), the person who initially recruited Kokila. He blackmails her into undertaking one last, massive consignment of 300 kilos of cocaine to be delivered to Alphonse (Rajendran), a major client of Bhai in Mumbai. With no other choice, Kokila enlists the help of her family. Unaware of the true nature of their task, her neighbors, Sekar (Yogi Babu), a shop owner who harbors feelings for Kokila, and Lakshman Kumar (Anbu Thasan), who is in love with Shobi, also get involved, adding a layer of dark humor to the perilous mission.

During the delivery, it is revealed that Kokila, in a clever move, has replaced most of the cocaine with salt. She then masterminds a plan to double-cross Bobi and frame him for swindling Bhai. This leads to Bobi's death, and Kokila continues the shipment run with her family and the unwitting neighbors.

On their way, they are intercepted by the police, who turn out to be Alphonse's men in disguise. Kokila and her family manage to fight them off in a surprising turn of events. Inspector Guru, who has been diligently tracking Kokila, finally catches up and arrests her.

In a final twist, Kokila makes a deal with Inspector Guru. She offers to help him bring down the entire drug cartel, including the powerful Bhai. They devise a plan, which ultimately leads to a dramatic confrontation where Bhai is killed. Due to the circumstances and the fact that Guru's wife was unknowingly present during the drug bust orchestrated by Kokila, Guru reluctantly helps Kokila and her family escape punishment.

The film concludes with Kokila and her family starting a legitimate business selling Kolam ( Rangoli powder), naming it "Kolamaavu Kokila," signifying their journey from the dark world of drug smuggling to a new, honest beginning.
