Plot:
The story begins with six-year-old Mason Evans Jr. living with his older sister Samantha and their single mother Olivia in Texas. Olivia, determined to provide a better life for her children, decides to move them to Houston to attend college. Over the years, the film meticulously documents Mason's life as he navigates elementary school, middle school, and high school. His mother marries and divorces two different men, each bringing new challenges and step-siblings into their lives. Mason's biological father, Mason Sr., remains a presence, evolving from a somewhat irresponsible figure into a more stable and supportive parent, eventually remarrying and starting a new family.
As Mason grows, he experiences the typical milestones of adolescence: moving homes, changing schools, forming friendships, dealing with bullies, experiencing first loves and heartbreaks, and developing an interest in photography. The film subtly captures the shifts in his relationships with his parents and sister, the awkwardness of teenage years, and his search for identity and purpose. The narrative culminates with Mason Jr. graduating high school and preparing to leave for college, reflecting on the passage of time and the unknown future, leaving his mother to contemplate her own changing role as an empty-nester.
