Plot:

The film opens with a truck driver accidentally hitting a deer on a deserted road. As he expresses frustration, the deer reanimates, its eyes clouded and movements erratic, signaling the ominous beginning of a widespread, unprecedented viral outbreak. Simultaneously, we are introduced to Seok-woo, a highly successful but emotionally distant fund manager in Seoul, whose relentless pursuit of wealth has left his personal life in disarray. He is divorced and struggles to connect with his young daughter, Su-an, who is celebrating her birthday. Su-an's only wish is to visit her mother in Busan, a request Seok-woo reluctantly agrees to, despite his busy schedule, driven by guilt over a recent incident at her school where he failed to attend her recital.

The next morning, as Seok-woo and Su-an make their way to Seoul Station, subtle signs of chaos begin to emerge: news reports of civil unrest, emergency vehicles rushing by, and an unsettling tension in the air. They board the KTX bullet train bound for Busan. Among the diverse group of passengers are Sang-hwa, a tough but kind-hearted man, and his heavily pregnant wife, Seong-kyeong; a high school baseball team, including the star player Young-guk and his girlfriend Jin-hee; a selfish and arrogant CEO named Yon-suk; an elderly pair of sisters, In-gil and Jong-gil; and a quiet, homeless man who seems to possess an uncanny awareness of the impending danger. Just as the train doors close, a young woman, visibly ill and convulsing, manages to stumble aboard, her leg bearing a gruesome bite mark.

Moments after the train departs, the bitten woman succumbs to the infection, transforming into a ravenous, agile zombie. Her rapid, violent transformation triggers a chain reaction, as she attacks a train attendant, who then turns and attacks others. The virus spreads with horrifying speed through the confined carriages. Seok-woo, initially self-centered and focused only on protecting Su-an, is forced to confront the reality of the crisis. He, Su-an, Seong-kyeong, and the homeless man find themselves trapped in a relatively safe carriage at the rear of the train, along with other uninfected passengers. Sang-hwa, who had been in the restroom, fights his way back to Seong-kyeong, demonstrating remarkable courage and resourcefulness in fending off the undead.

As the train speeds south, the passengers learn that the outbreak has engulfed the entire nation, with Busan being the only city still reported as safe. The train conductor attempts to navigate the rapidly deteriorating situation, making announcements about designated safe zones that quickly prove to be overrun. An emergency stop at Daejeon Station, supposedly secured by the military, turns into a deadly trap. The military personnel have already been infected, and the survivors are ambushed upon disembarking. Seok-woo, Sang-hwa, Su-an, Seong-kyeong, and the others narrowly escape back onto the train, realizing that there is no safety outside.

The main group of survivors becomes separated. Su-an, Seong-kyeong, Jin-hee, and the homeless man are trapped in a forward carriage, while Seok-woo, Sang-hwa, and Young-guk are stuck several carriages behind. Realizing their loved ones are in danger, Seok-woo, Sang-hwa, and Young-guk embark on a perilous mission to fight their way through multiple zombie-infested carriages to reunite. This sequence is a masterclass in tension and action, as the trio employs ingenuity and teamwork, using luggage racks, cell phone distractions, and sheer brute force to navigate the hordes of fast-moving zombies, who are blind in the dark but highly sensitive to sound. Their journey is fraught with near-misses and heroic acts, particularly from Sang-hwa, who consistently puts others' safety before his own.

After a grueling battle, they successfully reach their families. However, their relief is short-lived. They attempt to join a large group of uninfected passengers in a seemingly secure carriage at the front of the train. But the selfish CEO Yon-suk, fearing contamination, incites the other passengers to refuse them entry, accusing them of being potentially infected. Despite pleas and arguments, the doors are kept locked, forcing the newly reunited group to take refuge in the narrow vestibule between carriages. This act of callousness by Yon-suk highlights the moral decay that can occur even among the uninfected. One of the elderly sisters, Jong-gil, witnessing the cruelty and realizing her sister In-gil has turned in the back carriage, makes a heartbreaking decision. She deliberately opens the connecting door to the zombie-filled carriage, unleashing the undead upon Yon-suk's group as an act of revenge, creating a chaotic and deadly massacre among the selfish passengers.

With the train's path to Busan blocked by a massive derailment and the conductor sacrificing himself to try and clear the way, the remaining survivors are forced to abandon the train near a train yard. The group now consists of Seok-woo, Su-an, Seong-kyeong, Jin-hee, Young-guk, the homeless man, and the ever-scheming Yon-suk. They must navigate a treacherous, zombie-infested train yard to reach a military train that is their last hope for reaching Busan. During their escape, Young-guk bravely protects Jin-hee from a zombie but is bitten in the process. Devastated, Jin-hee chooses to stay with him, letting herself be bitten to share his fate, a tragic testament to their love.

As the group continues, the selfless homeless man sacrifices himself to create a diversion, allowing Seok-woo, Su-an, and Seong-kyeong to escape. Yon-suk, in his final act of depravity, pushes the homeless man into the zombies and then desperately clings to the back of the military train. As Seok-woo tries to pull him up, Yon-suk, already infected, bites Seok-woo's hand. Realizing his imminent transformation, Seok-woo makes the ultimate sacrifice. He ensures Su-an and Seong-kyeong are safely on the military train, gives his daughter final, tearful instructions, and then, as the infection rapidly takes hold and he begins to turn, he jumps off the train. In his final moments, a poignant flashback shows him smiling and playing with a baby Su-an, a memory of pure, unconditional love, before he plummets to his death, protecting his daughter until the very end.

Seong-kyeong and Su-an, the sole survivors, arrive in Busan, walking through a long, dark tunnel. On the other side, military snipers, under orders to shoot anything that moves, spot them. Just as the soldiers prepare to fire, mistaking their silhouettes for zombies, Su-an begins to sing a lullaby she had prepared for her father's birthday. The soldiers, hearing her pure, innocent voice, realize they are human and rush to their rescue. The film ends with Seong-kyeong and Su-an being led to safety, a glimmer of hope emerging from the ashes of unimaginable tragedy, but leaving the audience to ponder the cost of survival and the resilience of the human spirit.
