Summary:
Butta Bomma (2023) is a bittersweet Telugu romantic drama that transforms into a tense thriller, officially remade from the Malayalam hit Kappela. Plot:
The story begins in the picturesque, yet secluded, village of Duddikonda within the Araku Valley. Satya (Anikha Surendran) is a simple, aspirational young woman. She assists her mother, a tailor, and nurtures a dream of saving enough money to buy a smartphone to create content for social media. Her life is traditional, monitored by her family, and she often finds solace at a small shrine on a hilltop dedicated to Lord Krishna.
A mundane task—dialing a customer's number—changes her trajectory entirely when she accidentally misdials. The call connects her to Murali (Surya Vashistta), a kind-hearted and responsible auto-rickshaw driver from the town of Nellimarla. The initial awkwardness gives way to frequent phone calls, and the two quickly develop an intense, romantic relationship based purely on the sound of each other's voices and their shared vulnerability. Satya is drawn to Murali's inherent goodness and respect, traits she finds lacking in the local men who pursue her.
The escalating romance remains secret until Satya's parents begin making arrangements for her marriage to a wealthy local admirer. Faced with losing the only love she has ever known, Satya makes a daring decision: she tells Murali she is traveling to Visakhapatnam (Vizag) to meet him, hoping they can finally establish their relationship in person.
Murali is overjoyed and sets off immediately. However, disaster strikes before he can reach the meeting point. Murali’s mobile phone, the sole link between him and Satya, is accidentally lost after he stops to help a man in need.
The phone is found by Ramakrishna, alias RK (Arjun Das). RK is immediately established as a character of ill intent—a complex man struggling with unemployment and a shadowy past, who frequently resorts to petty theft and manipulation. Upon finding the phone, and recognizing the eager messages and location-based meeting plans, RK realizes he has stumbled upon a perfect opportunity. He decides to impersonate Murali and meet Satya himself.
When Satya reaches the designated spot, RK approaches her. Her excitement quickly turns to confusion and fear. RK's demeanor is nothing like the gentle, warm voice she fell in love with; he is aggressive and suspicious. Satya, initially distraught, mistakenly concludes that the man she believed to be her Murali is a fraud. Believing she has narrowly escaped a betrayal by her true love, Satya tries to escape RK's clutches.
The film then transitions into a gripping thriller mode. RK, a manipulative predator whose primary motive is revealed to be related to human trafficking, begins stalking Satya. He sees her innocence and vulnerability as an easy target. Satya is now trapped in the bustling city, pursued by a dangerous man she mistakenly believes is her boyfriend.
Meanwhile, the real Murali is desperately searching for his lost phone and the girl he was supposed to meet. The narrative cleverly utilizes the contrast between the two men who are both linked to the same phone—the genuinely selfless Murali and the deeply selfish RK—to create tension.
The climax involves a tense chase and confrontation where the real Murali eventually tracks the location of his phone, leading him to the moment when RK is attempting to trap Satya. The two men clash violently. Satya, witnessing the heroic action of the man she knew only by voice, finally understands the truth: the man saving her life is the real Murali. Satya's quick wit and local knowledge become crucial in the final battle, helping Murali overpower RK and prevent the human trafficking plot.
The film concludes on a thought-provoking note. Satya and Murali are reunited, their love story solidified by shared trauma and Murali’s undeniable sacrifice.
