Plot:

The film opens in the present day, with a team of Arctic explorers discovering a large, frozen aircraft embedded in the ice. Inside, they find a circular shield, instantly recognizable as belonging to Captain America, setting the stage for a story spanning decades. The narrative then flashes back to 1942, in Brooklyn, New York, where we meet Steve Rogers, a small and sickly young man with a fierce heart. Despite his physical limitations, Steve harbors an intense patriotism and an unyielding desire to join the fight against the Nazis in World War II. He attempts to enlist multiple times, forging documents to hide his numerous health ailments, but is repeatedly rejected due to his frailty. His best friend, James Buchanan "Bucky" Barnes, a strapping young man, eventually enlists, leaving Steve feeling more determined than ever to find a way to serve.

During one of his enlistment attempts, Steve's conviction and moral integrity are observed by Dr. Abraham Erskine, a German scientist working for the Strategic Scientific Reserve (SSR). Erskine, having fled Nazi Germany, recognizes in Steve not physical prowess, but a rare inner strength and a pure heart – qualities he believes are essential for the Super Soldier program he is developing. Steve is recruited into Project Rebirth and taken to a secret facility in upstate New York, where he meets Colonel Chester Phillips and Agent Peggy Carter, a formidable British officer. During the rigorous training, Steve struggles physically but consistently demonstrates superior intelligence, tactical thinking, and an unwavering selflessness, notably during a "grenade test" where he dives on a live grenade to protect his fellow recruits, only to discover it was a dummy.

Convinced that Steve possesses the ideal character, Erskine proceeds with the Super Soldier experiment. Steve is injected with Erskine's serum and exposed to "vita-ray" radiation, transforming him into a physically perfect human specimen, towering and muscular. However, the triumph is short-lived. A HYDRA assassin, Heinz Kruger, a spy disguised as an SSR official, infiltrates the lab and murders Erskine, stealing a vial of the precious serum. Defying orders, Steve, with the help of Peggy Carter and Howard Stark (a brilliant inventor and father of Tony Stark), flies behind enemy lines to rescue Bucky and the other prisoners. He infiltrates a HYDRA factory and discovers the true extent of their advanced weaponry, powered by the mysterious Tesseract, an ancient relic of immense cosmic energy. Here, he also comes face-to-face with Johann Schmidt, the leader of HYDRA, who reveals his disfigured red skull, a result of his own flawed attempts to replicate Erskine's serum.

Steve successfully liberates Bucky and over 400 other POWs, proving his worth as a true hero. This daring rescue earns him the respect of Colonel Phillips and the military. Steve then forms an elite commando unit, the Howling Commandos, comprised of Bucky Barnes, Dum Dum Dugan, Gabe Jones, Jim Morita, Jacques Dernier, and Monty Falsworth. Together, they embark on a series of successful raids against HYDRA strongholds, systematically disrupting their operations and recovering their advanced technology. During this time, Howard Stark designs Steve's iconic shield, crafted from the rare and indestructible metal vibranium. The team's efforts lead them closer to understanding Schmidt's ultimate plan: to use the Tesseract to power a fleet of advanced aircraft and weapons, not for Nazi Germany, but to establish his own global HYDRA empire, independent of Hitler.

Their pursuit leads them to capture Dr. Arnim Zola, HYDRA's chief scientist, who reveals Schmidt's master plan: to launch a massive aerial assault on major cities across the globe, including New York, with weapons powered by the Tesseract. During a mission to capture Zola aboard a moving HYDRA train in the Alps, tragedy strikes. Bucky, while fighting on the exterior of the train, is hit by an energy weapon and falls hundreds of feet into a ravine, seemingly to his death. Steve is devastated by the loss of his best friend, a personal blow that hardens his resolve and fuels his determination to stop Schmidt at all costs. The loss of Bucky is a pivotal moment, cementing Steve's commitment to his mission and the sacrifices inherent in war.

He radios Peggy, telling her he has to crash-land the plane in the Arctic to save millions of lives, knowing it means his own likely demise. Their final conversation is heartbreaking, with Steve reiterating his promise for that dance, a promise that will remain unfulfilled for decades. He intentionally crashes the Valkyrie into the icy waters of the Arctic, saving the world but seemingly perishing in the process. The Tesseract is later recovered by Howard Stark from the ocean floor.

The film then returns to the present day, where Steve Rogers awakens in a meticulously recreated 1940s hospital room. Disoriented, he senses something is wrong. He escapes the room and finds himself in a modern-day Times Square, overwhelmed by the cacophony and technological advancements of the 21st century. He is greeted by Nick Fury, the director of S.H.I.E.L.D., who informs him that he has been asleep for nearly 70 years.
