Plot

The film opens with Captain Richard Phillips taking command of the MV Maersk Alabama, a large, unarmed cargo vessel, for a voyage from Oman to Kenya. He receives warnings about increased piracy activity off the coast of Somalia and takes cautionary measures, though the ship remains vulnerable.

1. The Hijacking: Four heavily armed Somali pirates, led by the ruthless and desperate Muse, pursue and eventually board the Maersk Alabama. Phillips uses his tactical knowledge to hide his 20 crew members in the ship's engine room before confronting the pirates.

2. The Standoff: Muse attempts to gain control of the ship and extort a ransom. Phillips skillfully negotiates and attempts to stall, but the pirates eventually locate the remaining crew. However, one pirate is captured by the crew in the engine room, providing a temporary bargaining chip.

3. The Escape: In a chaotic attempt to exchange the captured pirate for the promised $30,000 in the ship's safe, the remaining three pirates, led by Muse, take Captain Phillips hostage in one of the ship's 28-foot fiberglass lifeboats, intending to trade him for a much larger ransom.

4. The Rescue Operation: The lifeboat, with the four pirates and Phillips aboard, quickly runs out of fuel and water, while the U.S. Navy launches a massive operation, deploying the destroyer USS Bainbridge and SEAL teams. The subsequent psychological and physical toll on Phillips is severe as he endures days of terror and uncertainty.

5. The Climax: The Navy SEAL snipers are positioned on the stern of the Bainbridge, waiting for an opportune moment. When three of the pirates are simultaneously visible through the lifeboat's tiny windows, the snipers take the shot, neutralizing the threat. Muse is captured as he attempts to negotiate on the deck of the Bainbridge. Phillips is rescued, severely traumatized but physically safe.
