CHILD 44 (2015)
Summary:
Set in the Soviet Union in 1953, Child 44 follows Leo Demidov, a decorated MGB agent whose life takes a dramatic turn when he begins investigating a series of gruesome child murders. Initially dismissed by the state as accidents or capitalist propaganda, Leo's persistent pursuit of the truth puts him at odds with the repressive regime, which denies the existence of crime, particularly serial murder, in its utopian society.
Exiled from Moscow with his wife, Raisa, Leo continues his clandestine investigation, risking his career, his family, and his life. He teams up with a disillusioned local police chief, General Mikhail Nesterov, to uncover a terrifying conspiracy and bring a brutal killer to justice, all while navigating a system where truth is a dangerous commodity.

Plot:
Leo Demidov, a loyal and ambitious MGB agent, lives a privileged life in Moscow with his wife, Raisa. His world begins to unravel when the son of a colleague is found dead near a railway, officially ruled an accident, despite the father's conviction it was murder. When Leo is ordered to investigate Raisa for suspected treason, their lives are shattered, and they are exiled to the provincial industrial town of Volsk.
In Volsk, now demoted to a local militiaman, Leo discovers more children found dead under eerily similar circumstances to the case in Moscow. Realizing a serial killer is at large, Leo enlists the help of the local police chief, General Mikhail Nesterov, to discreetly investigate. Their efforts are severely hampered by the Soviet government's official stance that "there is no crime in Paradise," especially not serial murder, which is deemed a capitalist affliction. As they uncover a pattern of killings stretching across multiple cities, Leo and Raisa face increasing danger from both the killer and the state, which views their investigation as an act of treason. Their strained relationship slowly mends as they confront the horrors of the killer's motives and the oppressive nature of their society, ultimately leading to a violent confrontation with the killer and the exposure of a truth the state desperately tried to bury.
