Plot:

The story begins in Buffalo, New York, in 1887, with a young Edith Cushing experiencing her first encounter with the supernatural. However, Edith's life takes an unexpected turn with the arrival of the charming, but impoverished, English baronet Sir Thomas Sharpe (Tom Hiddleston) and his austere sister, Lady Lucille Sharpe (Jessica Chastain). Thomas is seeking investors for his clay-mining machine, which he believes can extract the rich red clay beneath his ancestral home, Allerdale Hall, in Cumbria, England.
