DALLAS BUYERS CLUB (2013)

Summary:

Dallas Buyers Club tells the compelling true story of Ron Woodroof, an HIV-positive electrician and rodeo cowboy in 1980s Texas, who is given a grim prognosis of 30 days to live. Refusing to accept his fate, Woodroof embarks on a desperate and often illegal search for alternative treatments and unapproved drugs, facing fierce opposition from the medical establishment and the FDA.

As he navigates the complex world of experimental medicine, Ron forms an unlikely partnership with Rayon, a transgender woman, to establish a "buyers club." Plot:

In 1985 Dallas, Texas, Ron Woodroof, a hard-living, homophobic electrician, is diagnosed with HIV and given a month to live. Initially in denial, he soon realizes the severity of his condition and becomes frustrated with the limited, government-approved treatment options available, particularly the highly toxic drug AZT. Desperate for a cure, he begins researching alternative therapies and crosses the border into Mexico, where he finds a doctor providing non-FDA approved drugs and supplements that appear to improve his health.

Upon returning to the U.S., Woodroof starts smuggling these unapproved medications, eventually forming an unlikely partnership with Rayon, a transgender woman he met at the hospital. Together, they establish the "Dallas Buyers Club," a subscription service providing these treatments to fellow AIDS patients for a monthly fee. Their operation grows, attracting the attention of the FDA and Dr. Eve Saks, who initially disapproves but later questions the efficacy and ethics of the approved treatments. Ron's journey transforms him from a self-centered individual into an unlikely advocate for AIDS patients, fighting for their right to choose their own treatments despite the personal and legal risks.
