The third installment of the Wimpy Kid series follows Greg Heffley during his summer vacation. Frank secures Greg an unpaid summer internship at his office, setting the stage for Greg's elaborate deception.

Greg finds his escape route when he visits the luxurious Plainview Terrace Country Club with his best friend, Rowley Jefferson. He is thrilled to discover his crush, Holly Hills, works there as a tennis instructor. To avoid his father's internship and gain access to Holly and the club's amenities (including unlimited smoothies charged to Rowley's family account), Greg lies, claiming he got a job as a recreational assistant. His lie is supported by his parents, who buy him a restricted "Ladybug" cell phone.
