The film opens with Shalu (Preity Zinta), a spirited and fun-loving young woman, living with her mother, Sarita (Rekha), and her older sister, Nimmi (Mahima Chaudhry). Although they appear to be a happy family, there’s a hidden complexity beneath the surface: Shalu and Nimmi are actually half-sisters. Shalu is the daughter of Sarita's late husband, Shekar, and a woman with whom he had an affair. Fatally injured in a car accident, Shekar had pleaded with Sarita to raise Shalu as her own, a request Sarita reluctantly honored by adopting Shalu.
Despite Sarita’s efforts, she struggles to give Shalu the same love and attention she showers on Nimmi. Shalu, acutely aware of this lack of affection, feels neglected and responds with rebellious behavior. Nimmi, on the other hand, adores Shalu and stands up for her, although she remains oblivious to the true nature of their relationship and continues to view Sarita with unwavering respect.
The dynamics of the family change when Dev Khanna (Arjun Rampal) enters their lives. Initially, Shalu and Dev do not get along, but as they spend more time together, they gradually fall in love. Their budding relationship introduces a new layer of complexity into the already strained family dynamics.
Unbeknownst to Shalu, Nimmi starts to believe that Dev is interested in her rather than her sister. Sarita, interpreting Nimmi’s feelings as genuine and unaware of the true nature of the relationship between Shalu and Dev, offers a marriage proposal to Dev’s father (Alok Nath) on Nimmi’s behalf. Dev’s father is initially taken aback when he realizes that Sarita is talking about Nimmi and not Shalu.
Sarita’s misunderstanding escalates when she sees Dev and Shalu together and, fueled by jealousy and past grievances, concludes that Shalu has stolen Dev from Nimmi in the same way that Shalu’s mother supposedly stole Shekar from her. In a fit of anger, Sarita reveals Shalu's true parentage to her in front of Nimmi, causing shock and heartbreak.
Confronted with the truth, Shalu decides to sacrifice her happiness for the sake of her mother and sister. She resolves to give up Dev, and Dev, heartbroken but understanding of Shalu’s predicament, agrees to marry Nimmi in an attempt to make Shalu happy. Nimmi notices Shalu’s distress but is misled by Shalu’s claim that she has fallen in love with Samir (Jimmy Sheirgill), her childhood friend who has always harbored feelings for her.
As the engagement day approaches, Sarita’s political rivals threaten to use Shalu's illegitimate heritage to disrupt Nimmi’s marriage to Dev, who comes from a prominent family. Determined to protect her sister and her family’s reputation, Shalu takes a bold step. She rushes to Dev’s house and publicly announces her own background, asserting that her adoption by Sarita is a testament to Sarita’s generosity and kindness.
Shalu’s courageous act impresses Dev’s father, who reassures her that nothing will prevent the wedding. Sarita witnesses Shalu’s selfless act and is deeply moved by her daughter’s bravery and the love she has shown for her family. Overcome with guilt, Sarita realizes how she has mistreated Shalu and they share a heartfelt hug. Sarita then decides to ask Nimmi to step aside if Shalu and Dev’s love is true. However, Shalu intervenes, expressing that she no longer needs anything more than her mother’s acceptance.
Nimmi, initially delighted that Sarita has embraced Shalu, soon learns the full truth from Samir. Understanding the situation, she willingly steps aside, allowing Shalu and Dev to be together. The film concludes on a happy note with Shalu and Dev united, and the family finding a renewed sense of harmony and understanding.
