DIYA / KANAM (2018)
Summary:
Diya (originally titled Karu, meaning Embryo / Fetus, and simultaneously shot in Telugu as Kanam, translating to Particle) is a 2018 Indian bilingual supernatural horror thriller film written and directed by A. L. Vijay and produced by Allirajah Subaskaran under the premier banner of Lyca Productions. Marking the prominent Tamil cinema debut of acclaimed actress Sai Pallavi and the Tamil debut of Telugu actor Naga Shaurya, the film co-stars child artist Veronika Arora in her acting debut alongside a supporting cast featuring RJ Balaji (in Tamil) / Priyadarshi Pulikonda (in Telugu), Rekha, Nizhalgal Ravi, Sujitha, and Jayakumar. Centered on the sensitive and taboo theme of forced abortion, the narrative explores the haunting aftermath of an aborted child whose vengeful spirit returns five years later as an invisible guardian-demon, systematically assassinating every family member and medical practitioner responsible for terminating her existence. Featuring an evocative background score and soundtrack composed by Sam C. S., moody cinematography by Nirav Shah, and sleek editing by Anthony, Diya combines supernatural chills with raw emotional grief and maternal bonds. Keywords: Diya Tamil Movie 2018, Kanam Telugu Movie, Sai Pallavi Tamil Debut, Naga Shaurya, AL Vijay Director, Lyca Productions Horror Thriller, Unborn Child Revenge.
Plot:
The emotional and chilling story of Diya begins five years in the past, focusing on 19-year-old college students Thulasi and Krishna. When Thulasi discovers that she has become pregnant out of wedlock, the revelation triggers immense distress within both their conservative families. Despite Thulasi’s desperate pleas and instinctual maternal yearning to keep the baby, their orthodox parents, a complicit family doctor, and an intimidated Krishna ruthlessly overrule her wishes. Under immense family coercion and emotional blackmail, Thulasi is forced into undergoing a clinical abortion, terminating her unborn female fetus. The traumatic event leaves Thulasi psychologically shattered, burying a deep-seated agony within her soul that time struggles to heal.
Five years elapse, and Thulasi and Krishna eventually tie the knot with the formal blessing of their respective families. On the surface, the couple attempts to build a normal domestic life in a modern high-rise apartment complex. While Krishna encourages Thulasi to let go of the lingering shadows of their past and look toward the future, Thulasi remains haunted by the quiet void left by her lost child. Unbeknownst to both parents, the spiritual energy of their terminated daughter, named Diya, never crossed over into the void. Instead, her invisible, conscious presence has grown alongside them into a five-year-old spectral child, lingering in the corners of their apartment, silently observing her parents with both deep affection and an all-consuming wrath directed at those who denied her the right to take her first breath.
The horror begins when Krishna's father pays a visit to the couple's new apartment. Sensing the presence of one of the key architects of her abortion, Diya stalks the elderly man back to his residence. The following morning, Krishna's father is discovered dead inside the overhead water storage tank of his residential building. Shortly thereafter, during the funeral rites, Thulasi’s mother visits Krishna's ongoing construction site. Diya traps her inside an industrial elevator, suffocating and crushing her to death. Sub-Inspector Raghavan (Inspector Agni in the Telugu version) takes charge of the mysterious deaths, noting a bizarre forensic commonality: both victims died under inexplicable circumstances caused by rapid, violent asphyxiation, yet with zero signs of physical struggle or external intruder DNA.
The supernatural vendetta accelerates when Thulasi and Krishna visit their family hospital. There, Diya crosses paths with the female doctor who performed the abortion five years prior. Trapping the physician inside her own car, Diya locks the automatic security system from within—activating the child-safety door locks despite no physical passenger being inside—and causes a catastrophic crash that kills the doctor instantly. The investigating police team is baffled by the pattern, realizing that every victim had direct personal ties to Thulasi and Krishna shortly before meeting gruesome ends.
The mystery unravels for Thulasi when her maternal uncle visits their home. Glancing at an old family photograph taken years ago, a horrifying pattern clicks into place: every individual dying around them was a conspirator who actively forced her into terminating her pregnancy—Krishna's father, her mother, the doctor, her uncle, and ultimately, Krishna himself. Realizing her uncle is next in line, Thulasi frantically calls to warn him, but arrives seconds too late as an industrial shipping container falls from a crane, crushing him to death.
Confirming her suspicions, Thulasi returns to her apartment and calls out Diya’s name into the empty air. To her astonishment, the invisible entity responds by activating a children’s carousel doll. While terrified by the carnage, Thulasi is overcome with profound maternal sorrow, realizing that the killer is her own lost child defending her robbed existence. Desperate to protect Krishna from Diya’s impending wrath, Thulasi begs him to stay by her side at all times. Krishna, dismissing her supernatural claims as acute trauma and bereavement psychosis, takes her to a psychiatrist for counseling. On the advice of the physician, who suggests that Krishna temporarily disappear for two days with his phone switched off to prove that no ghost is hunting him, Krishna leaves unannounced.
Krishna's isolation provides Diya with the perfect opportunity to strike. Trapping Krishna alone in a secluded room, Diya unleashes her telekinetic fury, causing the walls and heavy furniture to close in around him. Meanwhile, Sub-Inspector Raghavan begins to realize that Thulasi's warnings align with forensic evidence and rushes to help her. On the highway, Thulasi suffers a severe vehicular accident while searching for Krishna and is rushed to the emergency room in critical condition.
As doctors desperately perform CPR to restart Thulasi's flatlining heart, her spiritual consciousness temporarily leaves her physical body. In the astral realm, Thulasi's spirit confronts the spectral Diya just as the child is on the verge of crushing Krishna to death. In a heart-wrenching maternal plea, Thulasi embraces her ghostly daughter, validating her pain, expressing her eternal love, and begging her to spare Krishna’s life. Witnessing the supernatural confrontation before his very eyes, Krishna finally realizes the harrowing truth of what their past choices brought forth. Pacified by the warmth of her mother's embrace, Diya relents, releasing Krishna and relinquishing her thirst for vengeance.
Back in the hospital, the medical team successfully revives Thulasi. As she opens her eyes with tears streaming down her face, she carries the quiet, peaceful closure of having finally embraced the daughter she mourned for five years. The film concludes on a restorative and hopeful note: the doctor enters the room to deliver unexpected news—Thulasi is pregnant once again, offering the couple a sacred second chance at parenthood and redemption.
