Summary:

In a near-future world ravaged by an alien invasion, Major William Cage, a public relations officer with no combat experience, finds himself thrust into a suicide mission against the Mimics, a seemingly insurmountable alien race. During his first and final battle, he inexplicably gains the ability to reset the day every time he dies, waking up at the same point just before the invasion. Plot:

The year is 2014, and Earth is embroiled in a brutal war against an alien race known as Mimics. These extraterrestrial invaders, resembling fast, multi-limbed creatures with a hive mind, have conquered much of Europe. Humanity's last hope rests on a new combat suit and a massive offensive dubbed Operation Downfall, set to launch from Heathrow. Major William Cage, a slick, media-savvy public relations officer for the United Defense Force, is tasked with convincing General Brigham to endorse the operation. However, Brigham, seeing through Cage's attempts to avoid combat, orders him to the front lines. Cage, a man who has never seen battle, attempts to blackmail Brigham, only to be tasered and forcibly conscripted as a private, waking up in a military base at Heathrow.

There, he meets the eccentric and battle-hardened Master Sergeant Farell and his quirky squad, J-Squad, who mock Cage's inexperience. Despite his protests, Cage is forced onto a dropship bound for the beaches of France, the location of Operation Downfall. The invasion is a catastrophic failure; the Mimics were waiting, having ambushed the human forces. Amidst the chaos, Cage, terrified and disoriented, manages to kill an unusual blue Mimic, an Alpha, just before he himself is killed by an explosion. As he dies, the Alpha's highly corrosive blue blood drenches him.

Cage instantly wakes up, back at Heathrow, handcuffed to a cot, reliving the exact moment he first arrived. Initially believing it's a dream or a hallucination, he soon realizes he's caught in a time loop, resetting to the same morning every time he dies. He tries to warn his superiors and his squad, but no one believes him. During one of the loops, he witnesses the legendary Sergeant Rita Vrataski, the "Angel of Verdun," being killed in battle. He remembers seeing her in his first loop, and she makes eye contact with him just before her death, mouthing the words, "Find me."

Over countless loops, Cage dies repeatedly, each time learning more about the battle and the Mimics. He eventually seeks out Rita Vrataski, who, after a few skeptical encounters, finally believes him when he accurately predicts events she's about to experience. Rita reveals that she also once possessed the ability to reset the day after she was doused in the blood of an Alpha Mimic during the Battle of Verdun. She explains that the Mimics are a single organism with a central brain, the Omega, which uses Alphas as its nervous system. When an Alpha is killed, the Omega resets the day, learning from its mistakes. However, when a human kills an Alpha and is exposed to its blood, they temporarily gain the Omega's ability to reset time. Rita lost her power after receiving a blood transfusion for injuries, severing her connection to the Omega.

Rita becomes Cage's mentor, subjecting him to a brutal training regimen. She kills him mercilessly whenever he makes a mistake, forcing him to learn combat skills, tactics, and Mimic weaknesses at an accelerated pace. Each loop, Cage transforms from a cowardly PR man into a highly skilled soldier. Their goal is to find the Omega, which they believe is hidden somewhere in Europe. They speculate that the Omega is constantly shifting its location and manipulating events to ensure humanity's defeat. Cage begins to experience visions of the Omega's location, a dam in Germany, which they repeatedly try to reach, only to fail. Each failure results in Rita's death, and Cage's subsequent reset.

After countless failed attempts at the dam, Cage has a new vision, revealing the Omega is actually located beneath the Louvre in Paris. They abandon the dam plan and focus on infiltrating the Louvre. However, their efforts are constantly thwarted by the Mimics' overwhelming numbers and the Omega's apparent ability to anticipate their moves. During one loop, Cage is severely wounded and taken to a military hospital. Fearing he will lose his ability to reset, Rita makes the difficult decision to kill him before he can receive a blood transfusion. This reinforces the dire stakes: if Cage loses his power, their mission is over, and humanity is doomed.

Cage eventually realizes that they cannot accomplish the mission alone. He decides to recruit his old squad, J-Squad, by demonstrating his foreknowledge of their actions and the Mimics' movements. Despite their initial disbelief and hostility, Cage's uncanny accuracy convinces them to join his desperate, unauthorized mission. They steal a dropship and make their way towards Paris, knowing this is a one-way trip, as Cage has already lost his reset ability after being injured and receiving a blood transfusion during an earlier, unavoidable encounter with Mimics. The stakes are now permanent: every death is final.

The team infiltrates Paris, facing a gauntlet of Mimics. J-Squad members bravely sacrifice themselves to clear a path for Cage and Rita. Master Sergeant Farell and the remaining squad members provide a crucial diversion, allowing Cage and Rita to descend into the catacombs beneath the Louvre. They discover the Omega, a massive, pulsating core at the center of a vast network of Mimics. As they approach, a massive Alpha Mimic guards the Omega. Rita, understanding the necessity of the sacrifice, engages the Alpha in a desperate battle, creating an opening for Cage, knowing she will not reset. She is fatally wounded.

Cage, heartbroken but resolute, confronts the Omega. He activates a belt of grenades, knowing he must die to destroy it. The Omega attempts to send out a final wave of Mimics, but Cage detonates the explosives, blowing himself and the Omega apart. As he dies, covered in the Omega's blue blood, he once again absorbs its power, initiating a final, unexpected reset. Cage wakes up on the dropship, en route to Heathrow for his initial meeting with General Brigham, but this time, the Mimics are inert. The invasion has been repelled.

The news reports announce a decisive human victory, with the Mimics inexplicably collapsing. Cage, now a Major again, walks through the base, seeing J-Squad alive and well, completely unaware of the sacrifices they made in his loops. He finds Rita Vrataski, alive and preparing for a training exercise. She smiles at him, but with no memory of their shared struggle or the countless deaths. Cage, now the only one with the memories, approaches her with a knowing smile, hinting at a future connection, a fresh start for them and for humanity, free from the Mimic threat.
