Ek Hi Veer (Katari Veera Surasundarangi) (2012)

Summary

The film is a fantasy-comedy centered on Indra (Upendra), a mortal who is accidentally killed. Upon reaching the afterlife, he falls in love with the celestial beauty Indraja (Ramya), the daughter of the Goddess Mohini. Yama, the God of Death, agrees to reunite Indra with Indraja only if Indra returns to Earth and helps the Goddess Mohini regain her beauty, which she lost due to a curse. Indra must track down the source of the curse, an ancient diamond ring, and retrieve it from the possession of a powerful, modern-day gangster, leading to a hilarious and action-packed adventure bridging the mortal and celestial worlds.

Plot

Ek Hi Veer (Katari Veera Surasundarangi) is a vibrant fantasy film that successfully blends mythology, comedy, and action. The story begins with Indra (Upendra), a charming but perpetually unlucky young man on Earth, who dies accidentally. He finds himself in Yama Loka, the kingdom of the dead, ruled by Yama (Ambareesh) and his assistant Chitragupta (Doddanna).

While in Yama Loka, Indra encounters Indraja (Ramya), the stunningly beautiful daughter of Goddess Mohini. Indra instantly falls head over heels in love with her. He realizes that his death has brought him to an exciting, new, celestial world, and he desperately wishes to stay with Indraja. However, the laws of the afterlife dictate that he must be reincarnated.

Indra pleads with Yama to be reunited with Indraja. Yama, amused and also bound by celestial politics, agrees to a conditional deal: Indra can return to the mortal world, but he must complete a crucial, secret mission. This mission involves helping Goddess Mohini (Ramya in a dual role), who has been cursed, causing her to lose her divine beauty and power. To reverse the curse, Indra must find a specific ancient diamond ring that is the key to breaking the enchantment.

Indra accepts the mission and is resurrected, returning to modern-day Bangalore. He is guided by celestial beings (who appear as comical figures) and armed with a few magical, yet often unreliable, celestial artifacts. His search leads him to a powerful and ruthless underworld gangster who has unknowingly acquired the ancient diamond ring as part of his illicit collection.

The plot then turns into a thrilling chase where Indra, using his street smarts and occasional bursts of supernatural aid, attempts to steal the ring from the heavily guarded gangster. The comedy arises from Indra's fish-out-of-water experience, as he tries to apply the logic of Yama Loka to the real world, often leading to mishaps.

Indra and his celestial helpers manage to steal the ring after a spectacular confrontation. However, the gangster pursues them relentlessly. The final confrontation takes place during a significant religious festival, where Indra must perform the ritual to restore Mohini’s beauty. The gangster and his men attempt to stop him, leading to a massive fight sequence where Indra, aided by a brief moment of divine intervention once the ring is in place, defeats the villain.

The mission is successfully completed, and Mohini regains her splendor. As a reward, Yama allows Indra to marry Indraja, and the film concludes with the happy union of the mortal hero and the celestial beauty, celebrating the triumph of love across worlds.
