Plot:

Ted Crawford, a wealthy aeronautical engineer, shoots his wife, Jennifer, after discovering her affair with police lieutenant Robert Nunally. When the police arrive, Crawford confesses to the shooting, seemingly making it an open-and-shut case. However, during the investigation, it's revealed that Crawford himself planted the gun and that the weapon used to shoot his wife cannot be matched to the bullets found, despite his confession. He then waives his right to an attorney, choosing to represent himself, and quickly exposes a conflict of interest: Lt. Nunally, who secured Crawford's confession, was Jennifer's lover. This leads to the confession being inadmissible, and Crawford is acquitted.

The case is assigned to Willy Beachum, a young, ambitious assistant district attorney with a perfect conviction record, who is about to move to a prestigious corporate law firm. Initially confident, Beachum finds himself outmaneuvered at every turn by Crawford, who systematically dismantles the prosecution's case. Crawford's wife remains in a coma, making it impossible for her to testify. Beachum eventually realizes that Crawford swapped the gun he used to shoot his wife with Nunally's service weapon, then retrieved his own gun before the police arrived. The problem is proving it, as the only evidence linking Crawford to the original gun is the gun itself, which is missing, and the only witness is the comatose wife.
