Summary:

Plot:

The film opens in Quedlinburg, Germany, shortly after World War I. Anna, a young woman, regularly visits the grave of her fiancé, Frantz Hoffmeister, who died in the war. She lives with Frantz's parents, Dr. Hoffmeister and Magda, who treat her as their own daughter. One day, Anna spots a young Frenchman, Adrien Rivoire, placing flowers on Frantz's grave. Initially hostile due to the recent war, Dr. Hoffmeister is reluctant to meet Adrien, but Anna is intrigued.

Adrien eventually meets the family and claims to have been a close friend of Frantz's when Frantz studied music in Paris before the war. He shares intimate stories of their time together, including visits to the Louvre and discussions about poetry, which bring immense comfort and a sense of closure to Anna and Frantz's parents. Adrien becomes a welcomed presence, and a quiet intimacy begins to develop between him and Anna. However, Adrien is plagued by a deep sadness and frequently appears distressed. He eventually confesses to Anna that he did not know Frantz in Paris; instead, he was a French soldier who killed Frantz in the trenches. He came to Germany seeking forgiveness from Frantz's family, tormented by guilt.

Devastated by the deception but understanding Adrien's torment, Anna initially urges him to confess to Frantz's parents, but he flees. Anna later travels to France, against the wishes of her adoptive parents, to find Adrien. She locates him living with his wealthy family and discovers he is engaged to another woman, Fanny. Anna struggles with her feelings for Adrien and the weight of his secret. She ultimately decides not to reveal the truth of Adrien's confession to his family, protecting him from further pain. The film ends with Anna, having found a measure of peace and a newfound understanding of compassion, visiting the Louvre, a place Frantz supposedly loved, and reflecting on the complex nature of truth and love in the wake of immense loss.
