Plot:
The story begins with Maxwell Perkins, a distinguished editor at Scribner's, known for discovering and nurturing literary giants like F. Scott Fitzgerald and Ernest Hemingway. He receives an enormous, unpublishable manuscript from an unknown writer named Thomas Wolfe. Despite its chaotic nature, Perkins sees raw genius within and takes on the daunting task of editing it. Their initial meeting establishes a powerful dynamic: Perkins, reserved and meticulous, and Wolfe, effusive and larger-than-life.
What follows is an intense and often tumultuous collaboration. Perkins dedicates himself to helping Wolfe prune his sprawling prose, spending countless hours in his office, cutting thousands of pages from what would become "Look Homeward, Angel" and later "Of Time and the River." Their professional relationship deepens into a profound friendship, almost a father-son bond, much to the chagrin of Wolfe's mistress, Aline Bernstein, and Perkins' wife, Louise. The film explores the sacrifices both men make for their art, the emotional highs and lows of the creative process, and the eventual strain their intense connection places on their personal lives and ultimately, their friendship.
