The plot of Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii (1988) revolves around the wealthy Dhanraj family, led by Mr. Dhanraj, a kind but often overshadowed patriarch, and his wife, who is wealthy but notoriously bad-tempered and controlling. They live in a large house with their children and their spouses.

The family includes Ganga, the widow of their eldest son, and her two children, Ram, Amar, and Uma. Ram is married to Sita, and Uma is married to Lallu. Uma refuses to live with Lallu because he is poor, so Lallu ends up living in Uma's house as a “gharjamai” (house husband). The family dynamic is tense, particularly due to Mrs. Dhanraj’s violent behavior towards her daughters-in-law.

Amar, the youngest son, meets Asha, a beautiful woman with her own struggles. Her sister-in-law treats her poorly, adding to her difficulties. Despite these challenges, Amar and Asha fall in love. Amar, fearing his mother’s reaction, decides to keep his relationship with Asha secret. He only confides in Sita, whom he trusts deeply and considers a mother figure.

Uma overhears Amar and Sita discussing Asha and decides to exploit this information. She tells Ram that Amar and Sita are having an affair. Ram, already feeling neglected and suspicious, begins to spy on Amar and Sita. Their secretive meetings, intended to plan Amar and Asha’s future, further fuel Ram’s suspicions. He misinterprets their actions, believing that Sita is unfaithful.

Ram’s mistrust continues even after Amar and Asha marry. He becomes increasingly distressed, turning to alcohol to cope. One night, after getting drunk, Ram is rescued by Deepa, a compassionate doctor and his old friend. Deepa realizes Ram is suicidal and decides to help him. Despite Ram developing feelings for her, Deepa remains supportive and refrains from rejecting him, focusing instead on helping him regain his stability.

As Ram continues to struggle, he assumes that Sita’s pregnancy is the result of an affair with Amar. Meanwhile, Asha decides she cannot tolerate Mrs. Dhanraj’s violence any longer. When Mrs. Dhanraj tries to hit her, Asha breaks her stick in two, demonstrating her defiance.

Amar and Mr. Dhanraj come up with a plan to address the family issues. Inspired by Amar, Mr. Dhanraj takes a more authoritative role in the household to counteract his wife’s cruelty. This leads to a dramatic confrontation where Mr. Dhanraj physically confronts Mrs. Dhanraj, an action that shocks the entire family but ultimately leads to a change in household dynamics.

Ram proposes to Deepa, but she asks for time to consider. During a visit to Sita, Deepa informs her that Ram believes Sita is cheating on him. Ram, believing this, demands that Sita sign divorce papers. When Sita refuses, Ram storms out and goes to Deepa’s house. Deepa refuses his marriage proposal, leading to a violent outburst from Ram, who threatens her. He eventually calms down and leaves.

Ram’s confrontation with Amar escalates into a physical fight, fueled by accusations of infidelity. The conflict is interrupted by the arrival of Mr. and Mrs. Dhanraj, Asha, Uma, and Lallu, who separate the fighting brothers. Uma admits to instigating Ram against Sita and reveals that she had stolen a necklace Ram had given Sita. Asha explains that Amar and Sita’s meetings were not suspicious; they were merely planning how to arrange Amar and Asha’s marriage.

Realizing his mistakes, Ram rushes home to find Sita on the verge of suicide. He manages to save her, leading to a resolution of the family’s conflicts. The film ends with the Gupta family coming together, having resolved their misunderstandings and restored harmony within their household. The story underscores the importance of trust, open communication, and confronting misunderstandings directly for maintaining familial bonds.
