Plot:

Following a series of mysterious shipwrecks and the destruction of fishing boats, a remote Japanese island is investigated. Villagers report encounters with a colossal creature, which a paleontologist, Dr. Kyohei Yamane, identifies as a prehistoric monster, Godzilla, awakened and mutated by hydrogen bomb testing. Godzilla soon emerges from the sea, making landfall and causing widespread devastation in Tokyo. The creature's imperviousness to conventional weaponry leaves humanity desperate for a solution.

Dr. Yamane's daughter, Emiko, is engaged to Dr. Daisuke Serizawa, a reclusive scientist who has developed a terrifying weapon called the "Oxygen Destroyer." This device has the power to disintegrate all oxygen in water, effectively dissolving organic matter. Serizawa initially refuses to use his invention, fearing its potential misuse as a new weapon of mass destruction. However, after witnessing Godzilla's continued destruction and the immense suffering it causes, Emiko reveals Serizawa's secret to her lover, Hideto Ogata, a salvage captain. Faced with the unstoppable threat, Serizawa ultimately agrees to use the Oxygen Destroyer, but only under the condition that he takes the secret of its formula to his grave. He sacrifices himself to ensure the weapon can never be replicated, successfully destroying Godzilla but leaving a somber warning about humanity's capacity for both creation and destruction.
