GRAN TORINO (2008)

Summary:

Gran Torino tells the story of Walt Kowalski, a disgruntled and prejudiced Korean War veteran living in a rapidly changing Detroit neighborhood. Following the death of his wife, Walt becomes increasingly isolated and bitter, alienating his own family and harboring deep-seated prejudices against his new Hmong immigrant neighbors.

His quiet, curmudgeonly life is disrupted when his Hmong teenage neighbor, Thao Vang Lor, attempts to steal his prized 1972 Ford Gran Torino as part of a gang initiation. This incident reluctantly pulls Walt into the lives of Thao and his family, leading to an unexpected bond that challenges Walt's long-held beliefs and ultimately prompts him to confront the gang threatening the community, culminating in a profound act of sacrifice.

Plot:

After his wife's funeral, retired auto worker Walt Kowalski is left alone in his decaying Detroit home, surrounded by a Hmong community he resents. His relationship with his sons is strained, and he spends his days maintaining his house, drinking Pabst Blue Ribbon, and cleaning his M1 Garand rifle. His quiet routine is shattered when Thao Vang Lor, a timid Hmong teenager from next door, attempts to steal Walt's immaculate Gran Torino under pressure from his gang-member cousin, Spider. Walt thwarts the theft with his rifle, inadvertently becoming a reluctant hero in the eyes of the Hmong family.

As atonement for Thao's attempted theft, his mother insists he work for Walt. Initially resistant, Walt eventually begins to assign Thao tasks around the neighborhood, teaching him valuable life skills and a sense of responsibility. Through this interaction, and the persistent friendliness of Thao's sister, Sue, Walt slowly begins to shed his prejudices, developing a paternal bond with Thao and becoming a protector for the family against the escalating threats from Spider's gang. After the gang brutally assaults Sue and attacks Thao, Walt decides he must act. Instead of a violent revenge, he orchestrates a confrontation that leads to his own sacrifice, ensuring the gang members are arrested and the Hmong family can live in peace, leaving his cherished Gran Torino to Thao in his will.
