Plot:

The story begins in the early 1960s with the return of twin sisters Olanna and Kainene to their newly independent Nigeria. Olanna, educated in London, chooses to live with the charismatic university professor Odenigbo, embracing a more bohemian lifestyle. Kainene, more business-minded, takes over their father's interests and falls for Richard, a quiet British journalist. Their lives are further intertwined with Ugwu, Odenigbo's houseboy, who observes the unfolding events with youthful innocence.

As ethnic tensions rise and the Igbo people declare the independent Republic of Biafra, the characters' lives are thrown into chaos. Olanna and Odenigbo's idealistic existence is shattered by bombings, displacement, and the horrific realities of war, including famine and atrocities. Kainene transforms from a privileged socialite into a resilient camp manager, demonstrating extraordinary strength.
