Summary:
High-Rise is a 2015 dystopian science fiction drama film directed by Ben Wheatley and based on the novel of the same name by J. G. Ballard. Plot:
Dr. Robert Laing (Tom Hiddleston) moves into a newly built, state-of-the-art high-rise apartment complex designed to provide everything its residents could need within a single structure. The building is arranged vertically according to social class — the wealthy live on the upper floors, the middle class occupy the center levels, and the working class reside below.
At first, life in the high-rise seems perfect. Laing enjoys lavish parties, modern conveniences, and a sense of comfort and isolation from the outside world. However, small technical issues — power cuts, water shortages, and elevator failures — begin to disrupt daily life. These minor problems quickly turn into sources of conflict.
Gradually, an unspoken rivalry develops between residents of different floors. The building’s strict social hierarchy fuels resentment, jealousy, and anger. The upper floors, led by the building’s architect Anthony Royal, believe they deserve their luxury and power. Meanwhile, residents of the lower floors feel ignored, exploited, and humiliated.
As tensions escalate, social order begins to break down. Parties turn into violent riots. Neighbors become enemies. Electricity and water become tools of control. The once-elegant building becomes a battleground where humanity’s darkest instincts emerge.
Laing, caught in the middle levels, attempts to stay neutral, but soon finds himself drawn into the chaos. As society within the tower collapses, residents abandon basic morals, turning to savagery, tribal behavior, and survival at any cost.
The final act shows the complete breakdown of civilization inside the high-rise. Families are destroyed, leadership vanishes, and the building becomes a war zone. The film ends with a chilling message — that this collapse is not isolated, but a reflection of wider social decay.
High-Rise is a disturbing allegory about class conflict, isolation, power, and the fragile nature of modern civilization.
