How to Train Your Dragon is a 2010 American computer-animated fantasy adventure film produced by DreamWorks Animation. Plot:
The story begins in Berk, a Viking island constantly under attack by dragons. The villagers pride themselves on dragon-slaying, and the chief’s son, Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III, desperately wants to prove himself worthy. However, Hiccup is small, awkward, and more interested in mechanics than fighting.
During a nighttime dragon raid, Hiccup secretly uses one of his inventions to shoot down a rare and feared Night Fury dragon. No one believes him, so he goes searching alone and eventually finds the trapped dragon in the forest. Instead of killing it, Hiccup sees fear in its eyes and makes a life-changing decision: he sets the dragon free.
As days pass, Hiccup discovers the Night Fury again — injured, unable to fly properly due to a damaged tail fin. Feeling responsible, Hiccup creates a mechanical replacement tail and begins training the dragon, eventually naming him Toothless. Their friendship grows as Hiccup learns that dragons are not violent monsters, but intelligent, emotional creatures.
Meanwhile, Hiccup is forced into dragon-fighting training with other Viking youths. Rather than harming dragons, he uses what he learns from Toothless to calm and befriend them. His unexpected skill impresses everyone, including Astrid, a fierce warrior-in-training.
Astrid eventually uncovers Hiccup’s secret bond with Toothless. Though shocked and angry, she changes her perspective after riding Toothless and seeing the world from the dragon’s point of view. Together, they discover the real reason dragons attack Berk: a massive dragon queen forces them to steal food under threat of death.
When Hiccup is chosen to kill a dragon in a public ceremony, he refuses and reveals the truth. The Vikings react with fear, and Toothless is captured. Desperate to save his friend and stop the cycle of violence, Hiccup rallies Astrid and the other Viking trainees. Using their knowledge and compassion, they ride dragons and fight alongside them.
The final battle against the dragon queen is intense and emotional. Hiccup and Toothless work together to defeat the giant creature, but Hiccup is badly injured. He wakes later to find that he has lost part of his leg — a sacrifice mirroring Toothless’s own disability. Their bond deepens as Hiccup adapts to his new life with the help of his dragon friend.
The film ends with Berk transformed into a place where dragons and humans live together in harmony, forever changing their world.
