Plot:

After his clockmaker father dies, Hugo Cabret is left in the care of his alcoholic uncle, who abandons him at the Gare Montparnasse train station. Hugo secretly continues his uncle's work, winding the station's clocks to avoid detection by the Station Inspector. He also dedicates himself to repairing an intricate automaton his father found, believing it holds a final message from him. To acquire parts, Hugo frequently steals from a toy shop within the station, run by the gruff Georges Méliès.

One day, Méliès catches Hugo stealing and confiscates his notebook, filled with drawings and notes about the automaton. Hugo befriends Méliès's goddaughter, Isabelle, who wears a key identical to the one needed to activate the automaton. Together, they discover that the automaton, once repaired, draws a scene from Méliès's classic film "A Trip to the Moon" and signs "Georges Méliès." This revelation forces Méliès to confront his past as a groundbreaking magician and filmmaker, whose work was lost and forgotten after World War I. Hugo and Isabelle help Méliès rediscover his passion and legacy, ultimately finding their own places within a newfound family and purpose.
