I ORIGINS (2014)

Summary:

"I Origins" is a 2014 American science fiction romantic drama film written, directed, and produced by Mike Cahill. The story centers on Dr. Ian Gray, a molecular biologist dedicated to disproving the existence of God through his research into the evolution of the human eye. His scientific certainty is challenged first by a profound love affair with an enigmatic, spiritual woman named Sofi, and later by a startling scientific discovery involving unique iris patterns.

The film explores themes of science versus faith, identity, and the potential for reincarnation, as Ian's life takes an unexpected turn when an astonishing find links a deceased person's eye pattern to a living child, forcing him to confront the boundaries of his scientific understanding and the mysteries of the universe.

Plot:

Dr. Ian Gray is a brilliant PhD student specializing in molecular biology, with a particular focus on the human eye. His goal is to find the "first eye" and scientifically debunk the concept of intelligent design. Early in his research, he meets Sofi Elizondo, a free-spirited, spiritual woman with striking eyes, at a Halloween party. Despite their opposing views on science and spirituality, they fall deeply in love. Their relationship is cut short by a tragic accident that claims Sofi's life, leaving Ian heartbroken and even more determined in his scientific pursuits.

Years later, Ian is a successful professor, married to his former lab partner Karen, and has made significant breakthroughs in his eye research. Karen develops a program that can match unique human iris patterns to a global database. One day, the program identifies a match: the eyes of a recently deceased person are identical to those of a living child in India. This impossible discovery shatters Ian's scientific worldview and compels him and Karen to travel to India to investigate. There, they find a young girl named Salomina, whose eyes are an exact match to Sofi's. This astonishing revelation forces Ian to confront the possibility of reincarnation and the spiritual beliefs he had always dismissed, blurring the lines between scientific fact and spiritual mystery, and leading him on a profound journey of self-discovery and understanding.
