Plot:
Ray and Ken are Irish hitmen working for a ruthless London crime boss named Harry. After Ray botches his first job by accidentally killing a child, the shaken pair are ordered to hide out in Bruges until further instructions arrive. Ken treats the assignment like a vacation, fascinated by the city’s history, art, and peaceful beauty. Ray, however, is consumed by guilt, depression, and self-loathing, finding Bruges unbearable.
As they wait, Ray struggles with the emotional weight of his actions. He contemplates suicide and openly despises the city, seeing it as a prison rather than a refuge. Ken, older and more reflective, acts as a quiet guardian, trying to keep Ray safe and distracted. Their time in Bruges introduces them to a series of eccentric characters, including tourists, locals, and a film crew shooting a surreal movie.
Ray forms a brief romantic connection with Chloë, a woman involved in the local criminal scene. Through her, Ray experiences moments of normalcy and warmth, though his inner turmoil never fully fades. Meanwhile, Ken begins to suspect that Harry’s orders may involve more than simply waiting.
Eventually, Harry arrives in Bruges with strict instructions driven by his own rigid moral code. He believes that mistakes — especially those involving innocent victims — must be punished without exception. Ken is forced into a painful moral dilemma that tests his loyalty to his boss against his compassion for Ray.
