Two decades after the first Independence Day invasion, Earth is faced with a new extra-Solar threat. But will mankind's new space defenses be enough?

INDEPENDENCE DAY: RESURGENCE (2016)

Summary:

Set two decades after the devastating alien invasion of 1996, "Independence Day: Resurgence" depicts a transformed Earth. Humanity has harnessed salvaged alien technology to create the Earth Space Defense (ESD), a global military initiative designed to protect the planet from future extraterrestrial threats. Advanced hybrid fighters, defensive weaponry, and even a moon base stand as a testament to humanity's resilience and ingenuity. However, this newfound security is shattered when a new, far more immense and destructive alien mothership arrives, threatening to complete the annihilation that its predecessors failed to achieve.

As cities are once again decimated and Earth's advanced defenses prove insufficient against the overwhelming power of the Harvester Queen, humanity's last hope rests on a new generation of heroes, alongside the returning veterans who fought in the original war. They must decipher the true nature of this new alien threat, understand its motives, and find a way to strike at the heart of the colossal invasion force before Earth is completely consumed, discovering that the aliens are not merely invaders, but harvesters of planetary cores, and that a benevolent alien AI might hold the key to their survival.

Plot:

The story of "Independence Day: Resurgence" unfolds twenty years after the harrowing events of 1996, when humanity narrowly averted total annihilation at the hands of an invading alien race. In the intervening decades, the world has united, forming the Earth Space Defense (ESD) program, a global military and scientific initiative dedicated to preventing future extraterrestrial threats. Utilizing salvaged alien technology, humanity has reverse-engineered advanced weaponry, built hybrid fighter jets, established defensive installations on the Moon and other celestial bodies, and developed powerful energy shields. Former U.S. President Thomas J. Whitmore (Bill Pullman), now a revered figure, continues to suffer from psychic visions, a lingering effect of his direct mental link with the alien hive mind during the first invasion. David Levinson (Jeff Goldblum) serves as the Director of the ESD, while President Lanford (Sela Ward) leads the United States, advocating for a cautious approach to any new alien contact.

The new generation of pilots includes Jake Morrison (Liam Hemsworth), an orphaned pilot who lost his parents in the 1996 war, now flying a tugboat on the Moon after a disciplinary demotion. His fiancée, Patricia Whitmore (Maika Monroe), daughter of the former president, works as a presidential aide, while her childhood friend and rival, Dylan Hiller (Jessie T. Usher), stepson of the late Captain Steven Hiller, is a decorated ESD fighter pilot. The world is on high alert after an unidentified spherical object is detected near Saturn. Despite Levinson's pleas for caution and attempts to study it, President Lanford, fearing a repeat of the 1996 invasion, orders its destruction as it enters Earth's atmosphere. The sphere is shot down over the Indian Ocean by the Moon base's defense system, commanded by General Adams (William Fichtner).

Meanwhile, in a desolate African region, Levinson and his team, including French psychiatrist Dr. Catherine Marceaux (Charlotte Gainsbourg) and Rain Lao (Angelababy), niece of Commander Jiang Lao (Chin Han), investigate a dormant alien destroyer that landed in 1996 but never activated. They discover that the alien pilot inside is still alive, albeit in a comatose state. Simultaneously, Dr. Brakish Okun (Brent Spiner), who was also mentally linked to the aliens in the first war and believed comatose for two decades, suddenly awakens. His awakening coincides with the destruction of the spherical object, suggesting a connection. Okun reveals that the sphere was not a threat but a benevolent alien entity, a rival species to the Harvesters, seeking to warn humanity. He also reveals the Harvesters' true purpose: they are not just invaders, but nomadic predators who travel the galaxy, harvesting the molten cores of planets to fuel their technology and reproduce.

The true threat soon materializes. A colossal alien mothership, ten times the size of the 1996 vessel, emerges from hyperspace and descends upon Earth. Its sheer mass creates immense gravitational disturbances, ripping entire cities from the ground, including Singapore and London, and dropping them onto other parts of the planet. The mothership's shield is impenetrable to Earth's existing weaponry, rendering the ESD's defenses useless. The Moon base is quickly overwhelmed and destroyed, with many ESD personnel, including Commander Lao, struggling to survive. Jake, Dylan, Charlie Ritter (Travis Tope), and other pilots manage to escape the Moon base just before its destruction, making their way back to Earth.

Levinson, Okun, and the rest of the team in Africa witness the awakening of the captured alien pilot. Through a mental link with Okun, the alien confirms the existence of the "Harvester Queen," the ultimate leader of the invasion force, and warns them about the benevolent sphere. The Queen's objective is to drill into Earth's core, steal its molten energy, and destroy all life on the planet. The mothership begins deploying countless smaller Harvester ships and ground forces, initiating a global assault. Former President Whitmore, experiencing increasingly violent visions and a deep sense of dread, believes he knows how to defeat the Harvesters. He attempts to communicate with the captured alien, which projects a horrifying image of the Queen, confirming her arrival.

The survivors regroup at Area 51, which has been transformed into a primary ESD command center. They learn that the benevolent spherical alien, which they initially destroyed, was attempting to deliver a message: it is an AI from a species of "Warriors" who travel the universe, uniting species against the Harvesters. The sphere, having survived its crash, is now transmitting a distress signal, attracting the Harvester Queen's personal escort ship. Realizing that the Queen is coming for the sphere, the team devises a desperate plan. They will use the sphere as bait to draw out the Queen's personal ship, then ambush and destroy her, hoping that without their leader, the Harvester forces will become disorganized and vulnerable.

To execute this plan, they need to get the sphere into a safe location and prepare a trap. Former President Whitmore volunteers for a suicidal mission: he will pilot a captured alien fighter, loaded with bombs, directly into the Harvester Queen's personal escort ship, creating a massive distraction and weakening its shield. In a poignant moment, he says goodbye to his daughter Patricia, and then heroically sacrifices himself, crashing into the Harvester ship and causing a massive explosion, effectively creating an opening for the ESD fighters. This sacrifice allows Jake, Dylan, and their squad to engage the Queen's ship in an intense aerial dogfight.

Inside the mothership, David, Dr. Okun, and others attempt to retrieve the sphere. They navigate the treacherous alien interior, fighting off alien drones and security forces. They manage to activate the sphere, which projects a holographic map of the galaxy, showing countless worlds destroyed by the Harvesters and the locations of other "Warrior" species. The Queen, realizing her prize is threatened, dispatches her elite guards. As the final battle rages, the Queen emerges from her ship, a colossal, terrifying creature, much larger than any alien seen before. She attempts to capture the sphere, but the combined efforts of the ESD pilots and ground forces create enough chaos to prevent her immediate success.

In a climactic confrontation, the Queen's personal ship is severely damaged. The sphere, now fully active, transmits its message of intergalactic unity. The ESD pilots, including Jake and Dylan, focus all their firepower on the exposed Queen, ultimately managing to destroy her. With the Queen dead, the massive mothership becomes inert, and the remaining Harvester forces on Earth are left without direction, making them vulnerable to human counter-attacks. The immediate threat is neutralized, but the war is far from over. The spherical alien AI offers humanity a choice: join the intergalactic alliance of "Warrior" species and embark on a journey across the stars to fight the Harvesters on their home turf. David Levinson, now a leader in this new intergalactic endeavor, accepts the challenge, setting the stage for humanity to become a cosmic defender. The film ends with humanity preparing for a greater war, now armed with knowledge and allies from beyond their solar system.
