Summary:

Billionaire industrialist Tony Stark is enjoying his global fame as Iron Man, but faces immense pressure from the U.S. government to surrender his suit technology, which he refuses. Simultaneously, he is slowly being poisoned by the palladium core in his arc reactor, leading him to believe his end is near and causing him to engage in increasingly reckless behavior.

A new threat emerges in Ivan Vanko, a brilliant Russian physicist with a vendetta against the Stark family, who develops his own arc reactor technology and weaponry. Vanko allies with rival arms manufacturer Justin Hammer to create a new generation of armored drones, forcing Tony to confront both his personal demons and a formidable enemy, with the help of his friends and a mysterious new ally.

Plot:

Six months after revealing his identity as Iron Man, Tony Stark is a global superstar. However, the palladium core in his chest-mounted arc reactor is slowly poisoning him, and he has been unable to find a suitable replacement element. Facing a Senate hearing led by Senator Stern, who demands he hand over the Iron Man technology to the government, Tony adamantly refuses, asserting that no other entity is capable of replicating his technology without significant risk.

Meanwhile, in Russia, Ivan Vanko, whose father Anton Vanko was Howard Stark's disgraced partner, builds his own miniature arc reactor and a suit of electrified whips to exact revenge on the Stark family. Vanko attacks Tony at the Monaco Grand Prix, revealing his technological prowess. After his defeat and imprisonment, Vanko is broken out by Justin Hammer, a rival arms manufacturer, who offers him resources to build an army of armored drones to rival Iron Man.

As Tony's health deteriorates, he appoints Pepper Potts as CEO of Stark Industries and hosts a lavish, destructive birthday party, prompting Colonel James "Rhodey" Rhodes to don a prototype Iron Man suit to subdue him. Nick Fury, Director of S.H.I.E.L.D., intervenes, revealing that Natalie Rushman, Tony's new assistant, is actually Natasha Romanoff, a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent. Fury provides Tony with materials from his father, Howard Stark, which lead Tony to discover a hidden message and the blueprint for a new, non-toxic element. Tony synthesizes this new element, effectively curing himself and upgrading his arc reactor. At the Stark Expo, Hammer's drones and Vanko's improved Whiplash suit attack. Iron Man and War Machine, now equipped with Hammer's weapons, team up to defeat Vanko and his forces, saving the day.
