Louis (Gaspard Ulliel), a terminally ill writer, returns home after a long absence to tell his family that he is dying.

The small plane shuddered as it descended towards the familiar landscape below. "Somewhere," as Louis called it, was less a place than a state of mind, a collection of memories both cherished and forgotten. After twelve years of absence, he was returning home, a prodigal son bearing the weight of a terminal illness.

His sister, Suzanne, now a woman with a family of her own, barely remembered him. The years had erased the image of her older brother, leaving behind a vague, almost mythical figure. Their mother, Martine, greeted him with a mixture of surprise and trepidation, her eyes searching his face for signs of the man he had become.

The awkwardness was palpable. The introduction to Catherine, Antoine's wife, was strained. "You've never met Catherine," Martine exclaimed, her voice laced with disbelief. "Antoine, you never told him about the wedding!" Catherine, visibly flustered, launched into a nervous recounting of their children, her voice trailing off as she stumbled over the name of their youngest son. "Louis," she stammered, "after, well, after your father, of course."

Antoine, his face a mask of irritation, cut in, "He's not interested in our children, Catherine." The tension in the room thickened. Louis, his voice weary, deflected the awkwardness, "Just catching up," he murmured, his gaze fixed on a distant point. He excused himself, stepping outside to make a phone call. On the line, his voice was laced with uncertainty. "I'm going to tell them," he confessed, "about the… the situation. I don't know how they'll react."

Back inside, the awkwardness continued. A chance encounter with Catherine in the hallway led to a stilted exchange of apologies. "I assume Antoine has… well, hasn't spoken very highly of me," Louis ventured. Catherine, her gaze fixed on the floor, replied, "He doesn't speak of you much at all, to be honest. He always felt… you weren't interested in our lives. I suppose I always assumed there was some truth to that."

Martine, ever the matriarch, joined the conversation, her tone laced with disapproval. "You should take more responsibility, Louis," she chided. "You've achieved so much, such success… you should use your position, your courage, to guide them." Louis, taken aback, explained that he had moved, that he hadn't updated his address. "I… I didn't want to impose," he mumbled.

A yearning for the past, a desperate craving for nostalgia, led Louis to express a desire to see the old house. The family exchanged bewildered glances. "The old house?" Antoine scoffed. "It's a ruin, Louis. A complete eyesore." The ensuing argument quickly escalated, shattering the fragile peace that had briefly settled over the reunion.

Later, on a drive to the shops for cigarettes, the tension between Louis and Antoine reached a boiling point. "Why are you even here?" Antoine demanded, his voice rising. "All this secrecy, this… this distance. What is it all about?" Louis, weary of the accusations, remained silent. The news of Pierre's death, his former lover, cast a long shadow over their conversation, a shared grief that remained unspoken.

At dinner, Louis made a feeble attempt at reconciliation. "I should visit more often," he promised, "and Suzanne, you're welcome to come see me." But the undercurrent of his impending departure was undeniable.

Seizing upon this, Antoine erupted. "Enough! You're leaving, aren't you? Just get it over with!" He insisted on driving Louis to the airport, his anger escalating into a torrent of accusations. The family erupted in a chorus of protests, condemning Antoine's brutality. "You're always the freak, aren't you?" Antoine retorted, his voice filled with a lifetime of resentment.

And then, without another word, Louis left. He walked out of the house, the weight of unspoken emotions and unresolved grievances hanging heavy in the air. He had come home seeking solace, a sense of closure, but instead, he was met with a storm of unspoken resentments and a lifetime of missed opportunities.
