Kanchana 2 (also known as Muni 3) continues the horror-comedy franchise, focusing on Raghava, a timid cameraman, and his repeated encounters with vengeful spirits. This installment delves into a tragic backstory of love, betrayal, and the pursuit of justice from beyond the grave.
Raghava works as a cameraman for Green TV, harboring a secret crush on Nandini, who also works at the channel. His lifelong fear of ghosts continues to dictate his life, forcing him to live with his mother and avoid being alone after dark. When Green TV’s ratings plummet to second place, Nandini suggests creating a horror program to boost viewership. The channel’s board approves the plan, and Nandini selects Mahabalipuram as the filming location, choosing a beachside house with an undeniably eerie atmosphere, unaware of its truly haunted nature.
Nandini assembles her crew, including Raghava, his watchman Mayil, the channel’s doctor Dr. Prasad, two lighting technicians, Arnold and Aravind Swamy, and the show’s anchor, Pooja. While filming on the beach, Nandini discovers a nuptial chain buried in the sand. This discovery marks the beginning of a series of unsettling events.
As the crew begins filming at the house, they encounter a disheveled lunatic running from within, further intensifying their fear. Seeking answers, Nandini consults a sorcerer. The sorcerer reveals that the nuptial chain is indeed haunted and instructs Nandini to return it to the spirit. Nandini, skeptical, is challenged by the sorcerer to verify his claim by revisiting the spot where she found the chain.
Nandini and Pooja, driven by curiosity, disturb the chain a second time, incurring the wrath of the vengeful spirit. They are physically attacked, and the spirit refuses to leave them. In desperation, Nandini returns to the sorcerer for help. He instructs her to prepare a coffin containing a woman’s corpse, dressed as a bride, and to place items belonging to Nandini, including her hair, clothes, and sand from the beach, inside. The coffin is then nailed shut.
The sorcerer instructs them to shoot at the coffin from a distance. To their horror, the coffin splinters open, and the corpse is violently dragged away by the unseen force. Panic ensues, and the entire crew flees in terror. Raghava collapses from the shock. The sorcerer is killed by the vengeful spirit, which then possesses Nandini.
The possessed Nandini convinces the Green TV head to relocate the filming to a different house. Raghava and the possessed Nandini move into a new dwelling, where, to their surprise, Raghava’s mother and Nandini’s sister-in-law also arrive.
Raghava begins to notice unsettling changes in Nandini’s behavior. She starts smoking at night and repeatedly murmurs, “Shiva, Shiva.” The possessed Nandini becomes violent, physically assaulting Raghava, his mother, and her sister-in-law. The family soon realizes that Nandini has been possessed.
Nandini, now controlled by the spirit of Ganga, manipulates another spirit, Shiva’s, to possess Raghava. The violence escalates, with Raghava (possessed by Shiva) also attacking his family. In desperation, they seek refuge in a church. Shiva and Ganga attack the priests, who attempt to burn them. The spirits retreat and reveal their tragic backstory through a flashback.
The flashback unveils the tragic tale of Ganga and Shiva. Ganga is a physically disabled young woman who organizes a wedding, inviting her friend Gayathri and her family. While visiting Marudhu with her father, Ganga is assaulted by Marudhu’s mentally unstable son, Shankar. The incident leads to the cancellation of Ganga’s wedding, and her father, overwhelmed by shame and despair, commits suicide.
Shiva, who deeply loves Ganga, finds solace in the wedding’s cancellation, as it reveals Ganga’s reciprocal feelings for him. However, their happiness is short-lived. Marudhu and his accomplices kidnap Ganga and her friend’s family, taking them to a wedding hall. Marudhu reveals that he orchestrated the cancellation of Ganga’s wedding to force her to marry his son, Shankar.
Shiva arrives to rescue Ganga, declaring his love for her. Marudhu and Shankar then brutally stab Shiva in the back. In a fit of rage, Shiva kills Shankar. Marudhu’s brother retaliates, murdering Shiva. Marudhu, consumed by grief and vengeance for his son’s death, strangles Ganga with the nuptial chain and kills Shiva’s and Ganga’s friend’s family. He also drives Shiva’s best friend insane. Marudhu and his associates bury the bodies on the beach where the Green TV crew later filmed their program.
Back in the present, Marudhu learns that a spirit killed his brother. He enlists the help of a tantrik to revive Shankar’s spirit to destroy Shiva and Ganga. A spectral battle ensues between Shiva and Shankar, with Shiva ultimately emerging victorious. Ganga then takes her revenge on Marudhu, killing him. Shiva then relinquishes control of Raghava’s body, returning him safely to his family, promising to return if ever needed.
The film concludes with the story of Shiva and Ganga becoming a popular television program on Green TV, restoring the channel to its top ranking. The tragic love story and the fight for justice from beyond the grave resonate with viewers, bringing success to the channel that inadvertently unearthed their story.
