Summary:

Based on a Hindu legend, Kannappa tells the epic story of a once-atheist hunter who undergoes a profound transformation to become an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva. His unwavering faith leads him to make the ultimate sacrifice, going so far as to offer his own eyes to the deity. The film promises a grand visual scale inspired by "Lord of the Rings," merging traditional Indian storytelling with modern cinematic ambition.

Detailed Plot:

The film is a retelling of the revered Hindu legend of Bhakta Kannappa. The story is set in ancient times and revolves around a fierce hunter named Thinnan. Initially, Thinnan is portrayed as a man who does not believe in gods and lives a life deeply connected to nature and hunting.

One day, while hunting in the forest, Thinnan encounters a Shiva Lingam (an iconic representation of Lord Shiva) in a dilapidated temple. He observes that the Lingam is not being properly cared for. Driven by a newfound, inexplicable devotion, Thinnan begins to worship Lord Shiva in his own unique and unconventional way, which often goes against traditional Brahminical rituals. He offers wild meat from his hunts, splashes water from his mouth for Abhishek (sacred bathing), and places flowers found in the forest on the Lingam using his feet.

A Brahmin priest, who regularly performs traditional pujas at the temple, is horrified by Thinnan's "impure" offerings and tries to cleanse the Lingam. However, the next day, Thinnan repeats his actions. This cycle continues, puzzling the priest.

One day, Lord Shiva decides to test Thinnan's devotion. Blood and tears start to flow from one of the eyes of the Shiva Lingam. The priest is distraught and believes it's an ill omen. However, Thinnan, deeply distressed by his deity's suffering, decides to apply herbs and remedies he knows from the forest. When nothing works, he remembers a saying that "an eye for an eye" can cure. Without hesitation, he plucks out one of his own eyes and places it on the bleeding eye of the Lingam.

Miraculously, the bleeding stops from that eye, but then the other eye of the Lingam begins to bleed. Thinnan, in an ultimate act of selfless devotion, prepares to pluck out his second eye to offer it to Lord Shiva. Realizing that he would be blind and unable to locate the precise spot on the Lingam, he places his foot on the bleeding eye to mark its position, and then prepares to remove his remaining eye.

At this moment of supreme sacrifice, Lord Shiva appears before him, stopping him. Moved by Thinnan's unparalleled devotion, Shiva bestows upon him the name "Kannappa" (from "Kannu Appa" or "father of the eyes," or one who gave his eyes) and grants him salvation, making him one of the 63 Nayanmars (Saivite saints).

The film aims to bring this powerful mythological saga to life with grand visuals and a pan-Indian approach.
