Summary:
Kathiresan, a witty petty thief, escapes from prison and encounters his doppelgänger, Jeevanandham, a benevolent social activist and hydrologist who is fighting against a powerful corporate giant attempting to seize fertile agricultural land from villagers for a factory. Kathiresan initially impersonates Jeevanandham for personal gain but is deeply moved by the farmers' plight and takes up their cause, leading a powerful protest against corporate greed and corruption, while navigating a dangerous game of cat-and-mouse with both the police and the corporate villain.
Plot (Movie Story):
The film opens in Kolkata, where Kathiresan "Kathir" (Vijay) is a cunning and resourceful prisoner. He orchestrates a clever escape, even aiding the police in capturing another escaping prisoner, Vivek Banerjee (Tota Roy Chowdhury), as a diversion. In Chennai, Kathir plans to escape to Bangkok with his friend Ravi (Sathish), driven by a desire for a luxurious life. His plans briefly change when he falls for Ankitha (Samantha Ruth Prabhu).
One day, Kathir and Ravi witness a shooting incident. The victim, Jeevanandham "Jeeva" (also played by Vijay), bears an uncanny resemblance to Kathir. They rush Jeeva to the hospital. To avoid the police who are looking for him, Kathir decides to impersonate Jeeva.
Under Jeeva's identity, Kathir and Ravi enter a retirement home run by Jeeva, initially planning to steal ₹25 lakh for their Bangkok trip. However, as Kathir delves deeper into Jeeva's life, he discovers Jeeva's true mission and dedication.
A significant flashback reveals Jeeva's story: He is an honest and idealistic hydrologist and social activist from a village called Thanoothu. Jeeva had successfully identified a vast underground water resource in his village, capable of irrigating the entire Tirunelveli and Thoothukudi districts. However, a greedy and ruthless multinational corporate magnate, Shirag (Neil Nitin Mukesh), tricks the innocent villagers into selling their fertile lands for the construction of a factory, exploiting their illiteracy and vulnerability. Jeeva tries to expose Shirag's deceit, but he is framed and arrested. In a desperate attempt to bring their plight to the media's attention and secure Jeeva's release, six villagers commit suicide.
Moved by Jeeva's past and the immense suffering of the farmers, Kathir undergoes a profound transformation. He sheds his selfish desires and genuinely takes up the cause of the villagers, still posing as Jeeva. He realizes the gravity of the situation and the devastating impact of corporate exploitation on rural communities.
Kathir, with the help of the retirement home inmates and his quick wit, strategizes to fight Shirag. He uses unconventional and intelligent methods to expose Shirag's corruption. He even manages to get Shirag's fingerprint on his neck to use as evidence. Shirag, realizing Kathir's cunning, sends his henchmen to eliminate him, leading to intense action sequences where Kathir demonstrates his fighting prowess.
Meanwhile, the real Jeeva, imprisoned in Kolkata, learns about Kathir's efforts through fellow inmates, including Vivek Banerjee, who has heard his story. Vivek helps Jeeva escape from prison, planning to kill Kathir as part of a different agenda. Unaware that Jeeva is heading for Chennai, Kathir continues his efforts to galvanize media attention to the villagers' struggle, even resorting to drastic measures like blocking Chennai's water supply by sitting on pipelines, thereby highlighting the villagers' plight on a national scale.
In the climax, Kathir learns that Jeeva has escaped and is being held captive by Shirag's henchmen. Jeeva, seeing Kathir's passionate speech on television, is deeply moved by his lookalike's dedication to his cause. On the eve of the court verdict, Kathir's true identity is almost exposed, but he bravely promises the villagers that he will rescue Jeeva and secure their victory. Kathir confronts Shirag, rescues Jeeva, and finally kills Shirag, bringing an end to his tyrannical reign.
The judge declares the verdict in favor of Jeeva and the villagers, ensuring their lands and water rights are protected. Despite the victory, Kathir does not partake in the celebrations. Instead, true to his earlier promise to Ankitha, who has fallen in love with him, he surrenders to the police, having fulfilled his purpose. The film ends with a powerful message about corporate greed, farmer's rights, and the transformation of an ordinary man into an extraordinary hero.
