The film introduces Virgil Oldman (Geoffrey Rush), a world-renowned and highly respected art auctioneer. He is a man of fastidious habits, an obsessive compulsive who wears gloves and avoids human contact. He leads a life of isolation, with his only true companions being his art. He has a secret passion: he has amassed a priceless collection of female portraits, all of which are masterpieces, which he keeps hidden in a vault. He acquires them through a clever and unethical scheme with his friend, Billy Whistler (Donald Sutherland), an aging artist who helps him manipulate the auctions.
His life is upended when he receives a call from a young and reclusive heiress, Claire Ibbetson (Sylvia Hoeks), who asks him to appraise her late parents' antiques. Claire is an agoraphobe and has not left her room for years. She refuses to be seen, and their interactions are limited to phone calls and her cryptic instructions.
