Plot:

Piscine Molitor Patel, nicknamed Pi, grows up in Pondicherry, India, where his father owns a zoo. He develops an early interest in religion, practicing Hinduism, Christianity, and Islam. When Pi is a teenager, his family decides to sell the zoo animals and emigrate to Canada aboard a Japanese freighter. During a violent storm at sea, the ship sinks, and Pi finds himself cast adrift on a lifeboat.

He is not alone; a zebra, an orangutan, and a hyena initially share the lifeboat, but soon only Pi and a Bengal tiger named Richard Parker remain. Pi must use his ingenuity and knowledge of animal behavior to survive in the vast ocean, facing starvation, dehydration, and the constant threat of the tiger. He develops a complex, often terrifying, relationship with Richard Parker, learning to coexist and even train the dangerous animal. After 227 days, they reach the coast of Mexico, where Richard Parker disappears into the jungle, and Pi is rescued.

Later, as an adult, Pi recounts his story to a skeptical writer. He offers an alternative, more brutal version of events involving human survivors and cannibalism, where the animals represent the people on the lifeboat. He then asks the writer which story he prefers, ultimately leaving the audience to ponder the nature of truth, belief, and the power of storytelling.
