Plot:

Lady Susan Vernon, a charming and recently widowed noblewoman, arrives at Churchill, the estate of her brother-in-law Charles Vernon and his wife Catherine, seeking to escape gossip about her various romantic entanglements. Her primary objective is to secure a wealthy husband for herself and an equally prosperous match for her demure teenage daughter, Frederica, who is currently residing at a boarding school.

Upon her arrival, Lady Susan quickly sets her sights on Catherine's handsome and eligible brother, Reginald DeCourcy, for herself, despite his initial reservations about her reputation. Simultaneously, she attempts to coerce Frederica into marrying the exceedingly wealthy but incredibly foolish Sir James Martin. Frederica, however, is deeply averse to Sir James and seeks refuge and sympathy from Reginald and others at Churchill.

Lady Susan skillfully employs her wit, beauty, and manipulative prowess to charm those around her, including Reginald, who soon falls under her spell. She deftly manages multiple romantic prospects and social intrigues, all while maintaining an outward facade of propriety. Her schemes are complicated by the arrival of her American confidante, Alicia Johnson, and the reappearance of other figures from her past, threatening to expose her true intentions.
