Plot:

Upon their return, they are arrested in their home during the night, charged with violating Virginia's Racial Integrity Act, and sentenced to one year in prison, suspended on the condition that they leave Virginia and not return together for 25 years.

Forced to relocate to Washington D.C., the Lovings struggle with the cultural shift and Mildred's profound longing for her family and the rural life she knows. As their family grows, Mildred, inspired by the burgeoning Civil Rights Movement, writes to Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy for help. Her letter is passed to the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), who assign young lawyers Bernard Cohen and Philip Hirschkop to their case, recognizing its potential for a broader legal impact.

The lawyers advise the Lovings to return to Virginia to be arrested again, creating a clear legal challenge that can be escalated through the courts.
